DescriptionMy friend John recommended Brian Stelfreeze as a good choice to contribute to my Miyazaki theme. He lives in Atlanta and I only just met him one month ago in Seattle at my first Emerald City ComiCon. Brian came to WonderCon with my friend Robert handling the sketches and I asked him to go ahead despite John and Brian keeping the subject a secret from me. It seemed it wouldn't be any of Miyazakisan's feature films. I mentioned a few television series to John which weren't right. On Sunday, I walked over to Artist Alley and saw my friends John and Dave standing nearby Brian's table. I joined them and glanced over at Brian. He had just started inking, but I could see the wings and recognized the girl from On Your Mark. The exchange went something like this:Me: It's the music video. Brian: You know the music video? Me: Two cops disguise themselves in haz-mat gear and save the girl. I have the Japanese laser disc. Brian laughed and said: Your kung fu is strong. He then wondered aloud how the singers got Miyazaki to do it for them. They must be a nephew or cousin. This piece is my prize of the weekend. Studio Ghibli made On Your Mark for the duo Chage & Aska. The singers played it at their concerts and it played in movie theatres with Ghibli's Whisper of the Heart. In the video, police vehicles fly through a futuristic city and ram into the headquarters of a religious cult. Policemen and cultists fight it out with heavy weapons and explosives. The two police sergeants shown in the additional image discover a winged girl chained up by the cult and tend to her. However, government scientists in haz-mat gear take her away to study. Brooding in a bar, the two sergeants resolve to get her out. They break into the lab, subdue the scientists, and escape the building in a heavy vehicle while being chased. One sequence seems to show them falling to their deaths, but the video goes back in time and the second time, the trio gets outside the city. The two policemen have a small convertible and they release the girl to fly away. Social/Sharing |
