I always wondered how film critics could review a movie and all its elements based only on their 2 hours experience and why there weren't any reviews or critics of comic art while we can spend countless hours staring at only one page.
And then I became a professional film critic...
Giving a rating to a movie is sometimes unfair but always gives some idea of the viewer's appreciation. That's what I'm trying to start now for comic art : to simply give a rating based on 3 elements :
1) Aesthetic : obviously highly subjective but still based on simple facts like the amount of work spent on the piece, the mastering of the drawing techniques, the harmony of the lines, the overall impact of the page, etc.
2) Originality : we're talking about art, so it should always be a quest for bringing something new. Any Greg Land's or Liefeld's page that copies some previous work (even their own) should earn a bad mark in my book, however masterfully crafted they could be.
3) Historic value : we're talking about comics, so context, characters, story should definitely have some value. For those who remember seeing the 1st Punisher issue drawn by Jim Lee, you know how impactful those panels were and still are. The same way, a cover of a famous issue should always rate better than the exact same drawing if it was only used as a pinup in an obscure fan magazine.
Those are my criterias. They are not meant to say the truth about a piece, just to give a point of view and maybe start a conversation. I also hope they'll change for a few people the way they talk about comic art. To me it's not a commodity but an art form so I'm fed up with people (including me and my friends) talking about a piece and saying "I would not give more than 4k for that piece". Would not it be nicer if we rather said "I would rate that page an 8 out of 10". The same way we can give a movie 3* out of 4 and not say its dvd will be worth $15 tops...
Although I'm a comic art collector, I prefer to stay anonymous for those ratings. This is a very passionnate hobby and when you judge another's pages, you're bound to cross some people. I hope you can understand that and the fact that I want to keep my friends! Anyway, I don't intend to spend time on pieces I don't like and if you don't like what I'm writing, you can always delete my comment.
And for those who believe I'm one of those envious film critics who like to critic others work, be assured I always knew I would never be Coppola. And it's the same way for comic art, I know I'll never have David Mandel's collection but I can't be jealous as it would be libe being jealous of the Louvres Museum ;-)
