Description

This original is just superb...a great period by Raymond, arguably his best, and the art was done very large, making an impressive impact on all who have seen it. The BEST.

man,i've never even seen this piece before!! each panel is a finished illustration that stands on it's own merits. my appreciation of his talent has went up even more due to your scans. thanks for putting these up. i can only cry myself to sleep knowing i'll probably never see these in person.

When did this notion that Raymond peaked in late 1935/early 1936 come into vogue? In the 1960s and 1970s, it seemed to be the consensus that the 1938 to 1939 period was the peak for Flash Gordon -- by then, Raymond seems to have learned that less can be more with respect to his superb line-work.

I'm hardly qualified to compare and pass judgment on Alex Raymond's artistic periods, but, just personally, I have always found his early inking style, far more interesting than his later cleaner style.

In this comic fandom over-sized of super-heroes, in a landscaped with skyscrapers made of tons of comic-books splash-pages... well to see only eight comments for such a masterpiece of one of the fathers of comics is really, really depressive... I think that among those who came after Raymond only Frazetta, Williamson and very few others have reached a kind of quality like the Master. Rob... a museum piece.

Raymond's brushwork here is just incredibly powerful. I love this strip. This is Raymond at the top of his form!
