Description

The art days of Christmas 2020 begins with a gift from the collector extraordinaire Eric DLS. Artwork as a gift is always welcome here! My high praise for Riley Rossmo in the description for The Batman / Shadow #4 cover inspired Eric to get this for me during the fall ComicArtLive event. While that cover featured Rossmo's creativity in all out action composition, this splash page from Constantine The Hellblazer #7 page 1 (2016) showcases his prowess in expressive storytelling. Young love on display as Rossmo opens the story with a couple having a picnic in Central Park. This kind of date only happens early on in a relationship. One can only hope this will last forever and Rossmo freezes this moment in time and this emotion in this splash page. However, being a comic starring Constantine and guest starring the Swamp Thing, I got a bad feeling about turning the page. Rossmo draws our focus towards the couple even as the living foliage surrounds them. He employs varying inked line widths, splatter, white paint and the ever trusty fingerprints to fill in the details of his loose layouts. You can see in the scan that there are plenty of areas where he does not trace over. This ensures spontaneity and liveliness in the piece that isn't just slick finishes. Thank you Eric!

In the next scene, I remember the branches turn into hands and rip the couple to shreds. That reminds me, I forgot to take my meds today.

Lovely splash! I've been admiring Riley Rossmo's art as well. Haven't bought any yet, but it's likely to happen...
