DescriptionWith the recently released X-Men movie, Days of Future Past, the sentinels are now the rage. But they first appeared way back in X-Men #14. This was the first installment in the famous trilogy of issues ending with the climactic conclusion in X-Men #16. The brilliance of the story-telling, the art and (above all) concepts are all the more astonishing when one judges them by the time in which these books appeared (in the mid-1960s). Not surprisingly, this era marked the high point in comics in general and Marvel comics in particular. We get little bonuses as well - such as the excellent Jack Kirby covers (with issue #14 being inked by the legendary Wally Wood himself). The art in the books themselves displayed an eclecticism of sorts. Issue #14 was inked by Vince Colletta. Respectfully, the inking by Dick Ayers in the subsequent two issues was much richer and better. Werner Roth did the finished pencils on layouts by Jack Kirby for all the issues. I must say that the cover to issue #16 was - to me at least - quite breathtaking, with the X-Men seeking to take on the towering Master Mold. The perspective as well as art were way ahead of itheir time. This page is the title (and splash) page to that issue. It is huge and hugely impressive, and I am glad to have been given its stewardship at the present time.May I also take this opportunity to thank the many persons who have taken the time and trouble to leave their very encouraging comments - many of whom I know well and who have even better collections that I (and whose graciousness and generosity are appreciated all the more as a result). I really appreciate your description - very thoughtful and insightful with respect to the art. Couldn't agree more about the impact of the introduction of the Sentinels in 14-16. The Kirby cover to 16 is one of the greatest of all time. Congrats on this capital "A" awesome splash.

Congratulations on this title splash which is truly a "Grail" piece! I was lucky enough to have seen this piece in person at a convention when it was for sale by the dealer, and it is one amazing and stunning piece of comic art. Thanks for sharing such a spectacular Kirby!

When I see the artwork, I take a chance to 'marvel' the creation of the page - from the writer's development, the penciller's translation, and the inker's embellishment. While this is a great Werner Roth page as Jay Gavin, excellent narratives are what drive me to post many times. I need to re-visit your gallery with more time to read your missives. I place you in the same pantheon as Chris K. and Ron S. with their narratives. Keep up the great narratives.

I'd make "The Supreme Sacrifice" to own this page!

Many thanks, Shaun. Yes, I was so glad to be able to obtain it although it was so very expensive at the time. I would not be able to afford it today.

Lord, I remember reading this story as a kid, in the Black & White Marvel UK weekly comics. I was blown away by this image. It more than stands the test of time. A classic never goes out of style. Enjoy

Many thanks, Aidan. And given that the cover is no longer with us, this first - and splash - page more than makes up for it.

The artwork is stellar, that's a fact, but I am SUCH a sucker for the title-lettering!!
