DescriptionHow time flies! Decades have flown by and my love of the hobby has continued unabated. I am one of those collectors who has an interest in almost everything. It has its drawbacks especially since funds are not unlimited. Like most collectors, my key preferences are driven by nostalgia. However, it is good to also have an interest in everything, not least because my nostalgia for (especially Marvel) Silver Age artwork is now largely unsustainable from a financial perspective. But my tastes have also evolved with time and I really do like some modern-day artwork as well. And evolution does not entail discarding. My heart still lies first with the older artwork but that does not mean neglecting great modern artwork as well. Even the best modern artwork, though, is now also very expensive so one has to be very discerning in the application of one’s (limited) funds. As already mentioned, vintage artwork is now largely (though not always) beyond my reach. However, I have been most blessed by getting into the hobby earlier. I now occasionally look through my collection to see if there is anything that could be shared with the wider collecting community. And that brings us to the present piece, purchased many, many moons ago. X-Men #1 is one of the most iconic books in the Marvel Universe. When it was broken up and artwork from that issue began appearing in Heritage auctions, I was eager to obtain a page. Overall prices were much lower then but so was the availability of funds. Also, the prices that those pages were going for were considered astronomical for that time. It was therefore clear that I had to try for the so-called “lesser” pages. I wanted one, though, with at least one or two of the X-Men on it. For such a page, this page fitted the bill well. The description by Heritage was quite apt, and I take the liberty of quoting from it: The Angel sheds his harness, stretches, and spreads his wings for takeoff, while the rest of the team rides in style in Professor X’s customized Rolls Royce. And to top this page off, Cyclops makes a dramatic cameo appearance in the final panel of this world-famous origin story. Even then, bidding on this particular piece was vigorous and I count myself fortunate to have bid successfully for it even then. I was glad that I took the plunge. I thought that I had already paid a king’s ransom for this page but was very happy at the time. I am even happier now as I could never have afforded it had I tried for it later – and certainly not today. But what fills with me with the greatest joy is the artwork itself – in particular, its history. I am truly blessed to be its steward. PS: I like Cyclops! PPS: A final note on the inker: it has been argued that Sol Brodsky was the inker, but I will go with the conventional view that Paul Reinman did the inks. Social/Sharing |

Many thanks, Jason. It is very humbling indeed. I have always maintained that we should be grateful for what we have and not lament what we cannot have. This piece of artwork reminds me of that - in spades.

Congrats on not missing this opportunity. Still kicking myself for letting it pass. All these years later, it seems incredible that this book got broken up, with every page available, during our collecting lifetimes...

Many thanks, Felix. Most think that prices are so high that they won't go up much further - which, with the benefit of hindsight, is a mistake. I learnt very early on that if you liked something and could (even if only very barely, as was the case here) afford it, you should just go for it. Even if prices didn't go up, given that it is a one-of-a-kind item, someone else might get it - and it might go into what is effectively a black hole.

Many thanks, John. Yes, "magical" is a very apt descriptor. Even leaving nostalgia aside, that was, objectively speaking, a watershed period in the history of comics that will never be replicated.

WOW!!! The history couldn't get bigger for the start of these X characters, this is where things are started and the lore is written in stone. Huge congrats, this has to be so X-citing to have a page like this in your collection; history, lore and art all in one page and happened here first.

Many thanks, James. Absolutely, it was the historical significance of this book that made me determined - as far as it was financially viable - to obtain a piece of artwork from this pathbreaking book.

Historic issue of X-Men and for Marvel! Kirby should be considered in the top five most influential and best X-Men artists if people knew their history. A herculean task by building this from the ground up while everyone just copies and goes does variations of something so ground breaking. It's so naive of Cyclops to think a teenager can tell the military what to do. I can like him here too, this is early before other writers ruined him.

Many thanks, Marcus. In terms of sheer output and influence, there is a very, very strong argument that Kirby is top (even though artists such as Ditko, Wood and Colan produced such excellent artwork in their own right as well). And thanks for putting in a good word for Cyclops!

Many thanks, Nils. And, yes, you are absolutely spot-on about this early, very clean, style - which contrasts with the very heavy, cluttered, artwork that is the trademark of much modern-day comic artwork.

Wow! Not many collectors can say they own a page from the first issue of any of the key Silver Age Marvel series. This is an excellent example--the three panels at the top are a classic Kirby getting-into-character sequence; and the composition of the panels at the bottom are very reminiscent of his war comics work and would be at home in the pages of Sgt. Fury. P.S. the edge in the inks has always looked like Reinman to me.

The nice thing about thinking that prices were astronomical even back then, is that you were prescient enough to know that those prices would only continue to go higher, even though you may not ever have imagined back then just HOW high. Let me also thank you for taking the time to go through your collection to look at what pieces you may never have shared previously. Knowing you, you will be pulling out more Kirby ,Ditko, Romita, Buscema art that you'd long since forgotten you even owned! Kudos, my friend!

Many thanks, Rubén. Unfortunately, I am not all that flush with vintage pieces, although I may have one or two more pleasant surprises. Yes, nobody would have foreseen just how high prices would go, although, in truth, I was always confident that, if I could swing it (which, fortunately, I did), this was one piece that would not go down in value - simply because of its pedigree.

Many thanks, Dirk. Much in this hobby - because it relates to one-of-a-kind artwork - is quite often a matter of timing. However, in today's market, a piece like this would be out of reach for collectors such as us from the get-go - which is rather unfortunate because being well-heeled does not necessarily mean that one is a "superior" collector.

Many thanks, Andrew, for taking the time and trouble to give such detailed comments on a piece that is clearly part of comic art history. And I am so glad that you mentioned having fun because there is a sense in which, especially in recent years, collectors have become too focused on prices (which is nevertheless understandable in light of the present reality) as opposed to the content and context that made our hobby such a wonderful one in the first place. Some call it having lost the "sense of wonder". Many thanks once again.

Probably the single most humble art description I've read here on CAF. Congrats on not only buying and holding a historic page like this, but seeing the reality that many of the prices of these pieces is far beyond the reach of an average individual, even if you've already purchased some in the past!
