DescriptionSamnee is a master of the dark arts. The techniques used in this page is wide and varied. Shadows, crosshatching, shade using dry brush, crayons and/or black pencil, and a combination of things for the final 2 cap panels give this page a gradient of textures that hits on emotional beats. In those last 2 panels, Cap's next decision to stay or return to his timeline is a weight that shrouds him like the darkness.Social/Sharing |

Appreciate this page more with your description! I haven't read much, if at all, any Samnee but I'm motivated to correct that now.

Yep, Marcus has a way with words like Kirby has a way with comic art...

You're right -- so many different artistic techniques in use here to make a really satisfying page. That is one weird looking dude in the sixth panel. Love the brick background.

Nice page! Where is the crayon used?
Looks like some in the jailhouse with that shading.

The sequencing here is masterful. So many good panels. I like the expression on Cap's face in the first one and the shadows in the last.

This is a great example of why panel pages deserve more appreciation. Each panel has its own design, you can't just do the blacks the same way in every panel. Is that gray lines or blue lines ?? Samnee has to really think about what's going on. Even then, it looks like he chose to change a pose (position of the gun in panel 3) or leave out certain details (stuff on the floor of the jail cell).

Panel 3 can be seen as connecting to panel 4 into a bigger panel, so the gun should not be pointing to the man in the shadow unless he's seen as an antogonist. As for the jail scene, Cap follows the Geneva Convention and would violate them if he dehumanizes his prisoners of war and make them eat out of a dog dish on the floor.
The loose layouts are in blue line by him, so he's completing his own work in ink as there are no separate pencils. It may have turned him off from selling interiors before, since Samnee's Captain America run is the first and only time so far that he's made interior work available. So while not as fantastic as some of the other pages out there, I was interested to see what he did on this page in particular. I was impressed enough to buy more, but that post will have to wait for another day.

Terrific storytelling masterclass by Samnee. Couldn't agree more regarding panel pages. I love splash pages and covers, but panel pages/sequential storytelling are the purest expression of how comics work.
Plus, this is just a cool Cap page. Thanks for sharing, Marcus.

Terrific page! Panel pages are my favorites among published works --- nowhere but in comics do you find storytelling like this. Love the comments & discussion here!

An ever elusive Samnee original! Everything about this page is fantastic, but I especially love that final panel. So much gravitas, and rendered with such grace.

Yes, good example how impressive a simple panel page could be and not obvious on the first view. I think everything else is already said. Congrats on this great page.

The texture of the page is off the chart. Congrats on it being in your collection!
