DescriptionJames Tynion IV’s run on Detective Comics was a great read, probably my fav’ recent consistent run on the Bat and that was due in no small part to Eddy Barrows’s incredible art. Barrows was no stranger to the Bat-verse, having produced another great run on Nightwing before that but he really upped his game on Detective. This impressive double spread comes from one of his strongest issues, the annual that was (spoiler) Clayface centric. The layouts are amazing here. Or more accurately how each panel is delineated by some old school movie reel running crazy, that is all.hand.drawn, to be in tone with the origins of Clayface. This is some kind of retelling/reboot of Batman’s first encounter with Basil Karlo has he tries to break in on the premisses of some chemical company to secure the componenst he needs to repair his face and the storytelling tells you all you need to know to understand what’s happening even in the absence of any word. In the first three panels, Basil gets into character as he shapes his face into one of the security guards. As he lucks out on what he’s looking for in panel 4, we get one of my favorite parts of this dps, i.e. the close up on his demented face in panel 5. I find Barrows is fantastic at these kind of extreme portrayals of emotions. Then the Bat drops in in a very effective use of negative space silhouettes. The last panel of the left page provides another strong example of the above-mentioned extreme emotions as Basil just looks plain mad here, only he is not happy this time. Then the splashy money shot as Batman punches him in(to) the face. The impact seems incredible here, as Basil has no choice but to drop both his crowbar and light, even a bit eerie and nauseating as Batman’s fist looks literally buried in his face, with many veins and tissues converging to the point of impact, already indicating that something is not quite right. Barrows is always super strong with anatomy and figures and that great Batman shot speaks for itself. The blow sends Basil flying and the fact that the reel breaks there is a great way to underline that this is an important break in the tempo of the story, a before and after moment. As Basil gets up from the blow, you can see that something is very wrong with him and Batman seems as grossed out as we are. I mentioned the layouts but also take notice how the panels are more and more tilted on the left to accelerate the action to the right splashy portion of the dps on the right. That’s quite a bold move in the sense that Eddy could have more easily achieved the same effect with a leading page and a pure full splash that the reader would turn the page to whereas he chose to really lead into it with this dps for a bigger payoff for the reader. The inks are insane here, with some washes thrown in, gradients in the blacks used on the page (just look at the panel borders within the reel and the inks within them), some delightful crosshatching and use of shadows and light. A great example of the best art team of a fantastic run. This is part 5 of my 2025 CAF birthday party, incidentally also my 20th year on CAF. Social/Sharing |

Absolutely Epic DPS! The money shot is certainly great, but the movie reel panel design is is a masterful way of telling this story. This is another perfect example of why Barrows and Ferreira are my favourite contemporary art team.

Great composition with a tie-in to Basil's origin in movies. I always liked the Basil Karlo/Boris Karloff reference.

Great dark noir filmstrip design! Barrows and Ferreira make each frame sharp as filmstock with action cleanly defined.

Man, use of light and shadow are top notch here and love how the film strip panels on the left lead to the Bat punch on the right! Congrats!
