DescriptionThis intense and impressive splash comes from the Robin Rises saga, written by Peter Tomasi, in which Batman, unable to accept Damian’s death, tours the DCU looking for a way to bring him back.Let me first say that while for strange reason, Tomasi has been paired/in the shadows of other talented writer like Geoff Johns, Snyder or Morrison, I always found his effort, were of better quality than those writers supposedly of higher profile. While I like the others, I always connected with his writing even more. In the same way, I wonder how Gleason is not a super star with comic fandom (much like his mentor, Doug Mahnke). His art is always super exciting and solid. Case in point, this impressive splash of Batman in his Hellbat armor (what a cool action figure that design would make btw) landing on Apokolypse in search of cure/way and bad handling a poor para demon. His pose, the layout, the staging of the scene all scream POWER to me. Then I guess the Bat did not like what the para demon told him in panel two, a cool use of the reflection in the helmet trope, given his somewhat violent reaction in panel 3. Batman may not kill, but when he is grieving, he certainly does not mind maiming. I posted the inked version of the page by Mick Gray who does a great job at making it pop in a way that reminds me of Tim Townsend’s (with less tiny bits of things flying around though), slick and crusty where needs be. You can appreciate the pencils in the other image and see that everything is there, not shortcuts whatsoever. To the point that you understand that Gray’s inks are pretty literal here, save maybe for the wings where he could have adopted a more visibly brushy approach where he decided to fully ink them, given us a graphic sense of a trye bat from hell raging fury on its enemies. Always enjoyed this art team. Gray, from my perspective, can do little wrong as an inker on pencillers like Gleason, JH Williams, and Ryan Sook.

I don't know why Batman looks the way he does here, but it's certainly a dramatic image. I was a Gleason fan from very early on, so much so that I even pitched him to let me represent him back in the day. Gray has always been a good inker on the majority of pencillers he has inked throughout his career, and he shows it again on this piece, even though the art of inking in the modern era is more akin to simply rendering, given how tightly everyone pencils now.
Oh, and regarding "...Batman, unable to accept Damian’s death, tours the DCU looking for a way to bring him back.". Why would he need to tour the DCU? Why not just dump Damian in the Lazarus Pit? Isn't that what everyone at DC now does when they want to bring back a "dead" character?

Totally agree about Tomasi's writing! Somehow he's underrated and it's a shame he wasn't given a decade-long run on whatever he wanted to do. Also one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet.

Plenty admire as th inks add the heavy impact when Batman is rearing back to give this parademon a smashing straight right! Batman will still punch you even if you got glasses on!

If I had that armor, it would be the only batsuit I would wear!

Great looking splash with the Hell Bat suit/armor, very cool! Thanks for including the pencils as well to see together. The details are very good, as is the inking on the seperate board. congrats!

One of the best kinds of pages...great splashy shot with some storytelling panels! That top image is worth the price of admission alone but then you got the headshot set up in panel 2 to the head SHOT in panel 3! Congrats, man!

Wow! A boldly (and beautifully) composed splash as the Batman tries to interrogate a Parademon by cutting a more imposing figure than Darkseid himself. (You'd think Batman might have more limited success with this tactic than when used on humanity's superstitious and cowardly lot, but you do you, Bruce!) That might explain the "thank you" he adds in panel 3 for good measure? Either way, this Bat means business, and Gleason and Gray also pull no punches here, offering up a highly detailed "in your face" moment. (The Parademon's drill-like tail is particularly scary to me here... imagine the fate of another, un armored hero grabbing them like this and exposing their belly... Eeshk!). This page is comic book "rawk and roll": brash, bold brawling in the service of good over evil. Fun add, Fred!
