DescriptionThis a pinup that Cully drew for the Ride collection from image/12 Gauge. To begin with, the size is quite impressive as it is drawn on two boards. Then we have a masterful composition and sense of design and storytelling that all the (former) Gaijin studio members benefit from. The tilted camera angle works wonder to suggest dynamism. Then if you mook closely at the overall design, you see that Cully seemingly put the car and characters riding on a huge roulette table. And yet I love how he played on the reader’s perception with the design as he puts some road railing and grass, suggesting the presence of an actual road which is perfectly embedded into the whole roulette design. The presence of the years in the first slots seems to suggest that these roadie bad guys have been at it for some time. Then the bigger slots below offer more storytelling propositions. A cop or another gangster firing at them in the first one, a femme fatale in the second. I LOVE how the light of the firearm being fired tangents with her light here, forming a curve that both suggests the roulette’s ball and leading the eye to the right. Also note how Cully drew the woman’s fishnets below where he/a lesser artist could simply have blacked that area up? Then we have money, ammunition shells and the inevitable two graves in which this kind of robbers will indubitably end and an ominous stare in the last slot. Then we have the Camaro car playing the role of ball. I don’t car(E) much for cars but when they are this well drawn, I do. It really looks like a gun pointing at the viewer here. Finally, we have the two “heroes”, young Sailor and Lula types, wild at heart, enjoying the life they chose. Again, there are plenty of storytelling choices to enjoy here. She looks sexy as hell but what I enjoy the most, is the tiny detail of her hair flowing to the right save for a lock stuck by the wind on her face. A realistic touch. Another nice and realistic detail is Sailor’s arm securing her from behind as she dangerously enjoy the speed and the road. You’ll notice his gun but also the fact that Cully chose not to show his surely wicked eyes. And yet, just looking at his grin, tilted head and flowing hair, you can tell his is also enjoying himself and that he is not one to mess with. (I’m sure that the pearl necklace hanging from the rearview mirror has some signification as well, but it escapes me. Most likely a lucky charm of some sort for drivers? Or robbers? In any case, it plays well with her hair and the fumes in the composition of that side of the pin up). Even the fumes behind them create a sense of chaotic freedom by generating a white space in the otherwise heavily inked illustration. And what inks indeed, as his other Gaijin alumni, Hamner is an expert inker, if only more visible at it than Story, Hughes, Pearson, Johnson or Stelfreeze. In the end, this a superbly composed illustration by a master artist and storyteller. Social/Sharing |

It's the joy of living in the fast lane! Violence, quick money, fast paced action, and getting what's yours! It's a ride that never ends ...until it does.

Well, it's probably good that the image stops here, before they hit 2020 and the inevitable concrete road block that would have caused the beautiful (and non-seatbelted) young lady to be thrown from the car and land in a bloody pulp, as that wonderfully rendered piece of automotive machinery is transformed into a twisted mass of shredded, burning death metal... ;)
But you nailed the brilliance of the composition (roulette wheel as life's highway, etc.) in your fantastic write up, F M! An amazing piece by Cully Hamner! This is a real stunner - congrats!

And she'll have fun, fun, fun 'til her daddy takes her T-Bird away!
This illustration is all about the design. Great looking piece!

Man, mix of design, depth, energy, inks...this one really does have it all, as they say! Must've taken Cully some TIME. Congrats!

Wow, this is fantastic. There's so much subtle storytelling here, as you said, with great use of visual significant details to do a lot of subtextual heavy lifting. I really dig the roulette wheel with the dates switched in. Very cool piece, Fred. Always bet black!
