Kneale is the younger brother of Nigel Kneale, the Manx screenwriter and creator of Quatermass. He illustrated the covers of the BBC Quatermass scripts, published by Penguin. He was also responsible for the design of the Martians from Quatermass and The Pit (1958), later filmed as 'Five Million Years to Earth' (US title).

The piece is painted using the C18th technique of decalomania, whereby paper is layed over a water-resistant paint floating on water, creating accidental shapes. This technique was championed by the surrealists in C20th, particularly Max Ernst.
