What a great piece of process work. When I was 13, and my art teacher asked us all to bring in paintings we liked, I showed The Silver Warrior to her. She was a generous spirit and saw everything in it that I did but she made a vigorous argument that -- his sword should be over his head for balance. I had to laugh when I saw the prelim, because Frank thought the same thing until he painted it. Thanks for putting this up. No harnesses on the bears, as Frank pointed out to Esquire in 1977.

It's funny how the 'obvious' solve is not always the most interesting, compositionally.

What a wonderful addition into your collection, and it's great to have the prelim beside the finished piece. The art teacher may have had her points, but judging by the overall success and immediate recognition of this painting by almost all fantasy fans... Frazetta's placement of the sword was fairly immaterial... I also had to do a double-take, as I'd never noticed there were no harnesses on the bears!
