DescriptionFreedom Brigade #72 (Sep 1985) - Interior PageA Private Little War In this issue, flighty genius inventor Charles 'Whiz' Wilson (and his time travel device, the Futuroscope) has appeared at Freedom's Stronghold in Philadelphia, and offered to take some of the members to the European war theatre to fight the Nazis. Before they can even answer, he transports them to -- a barn; not exactly the front line they were expecting. Orchid is annoyed, and the Face is not happy with Wilson's explanation of where they are. Calling out from above comes a voice demanding, "Who are you people, and what are you doing in my war?!?!". The Grim Reaper, who has been operating behind enemy lines for years by this point, has appeared and is not pleased by the interruption of these dilettantes. I think he was waiting for the cover of darkness to start a raid on a Nazi rural base. That, or he likes alone time in barns - he's awesome, who's to argue!? Bob Budiansky illustrates the issue's last page shown here, penned by Thomas Royale. Sharp-eyed readers will note that the team assembled in the barn appeared 'earlier' in King-Size Sentinels #2 back in 1968, as well as in The Sentinels #165 (Nov 1975). Apparently, that original reappearance was supposed to be their reintroduction into the 'modern' Standard Universe, but due to some editorial personnel changes (for full details, see the Setting the Standard! reference book on the Standard Comics publishing history), the story was not followed up on immediately. I guess it then became a bit of a running joke to pop them into a story, then have them disappear again, seemingly forgotten. Maybe someday I'll compile a list of their time travel appearances. Royale evidently remembered their appearances over the previous decade and chose to provide an in-story explanation of how they came to become displaced in time. Some would appear in the second Cosmic Crossover special (co-published with DC and Marvel) years earlier. The Grim Reaper, of course, was forced out of the comics limelight by the 1950s by the creation of the Comics Code Authority -- a skull and crossbones on the costume, a hangman's noose, a gun, a sword, and the name did not help. I'm pretty sure that King-Size Sentinels #2 was his first appearance in almost twenty years. The Freedom Brigade saw his return in a few back-up features, then within the main story, but not connected to the story of the main cast. Eventually it became clear that Royale intended the stories to dovetail in the fashion above. Roll Call: Black Orchid The Face The Flag Fearless Flint Silver Streak Redwood (formerly the Green Giant) Whiz Wilson Find out what happens in the next issue. ~~~~~~~~ Yeah, of course it's fake. Bob Budiansky provides the pencils and inks for this interior page of a book that doesn't exist. I thought it might be a fun change of pace to do an interior as opposed to cover page. It was fun writing up the little script (and sketch) that I inflicted on him. I think it's pretty cool, but then I don't get out much. For the inking fan, Bob says he uses: Primarily these two pens: Pentel Pocket Brush Pen Pentel Tradio Stylo Pocket Pen The first one is a brush, obviously, the second one is closer to what one would describe as a "fine-tipped pen" (it all depends how you hold it). Also, his agent Jeff asked him when the last time was that he did a panel page and he said at least 20 years. But he enjoyed the exercise and said laying out a page is like trying to solve a puzzle. Also, the word balloons are all me, so I take the blame for them. This issue's title, "A Private Little War", is a bit of a nod to Star Trek's episode of the same name. Also, WWII was huge, but each person's experience in it very personal. Especially kick-ass mo-fo, the Grim Reaper! "Oh, you guys were at home sipping Chateau de Chassilier? Well, I was liberating concentration camps, son!" Social/Sharing |

I wouldn't call this page a fake Roy! We can all see here it's quite real. Plus your lettering isn't half bad!:) Very cool all around!

The backstory of bullpen politics takes this to an entirely different level. You are a mad, mad genius, sir.
