DescriptionEver since I first read Bone in 2008. I had been on the search for a piece of art by Jeff Smith. I soon found out that Jeff had donated majority of his art to the Ohio State University Library but I still had that hope that I might find a piece so continued searching. When I first saw this piece listed on eBay I couldn't believe my eyes. It seemed almost too good to be true because it was exactly the kind of piece I had imagined. The auction description was a little lacking so I contacted the seller asking how they acquired the piece and was told that they had received it from Jeff Smith's company Cartoon Books for an auction a few years ago but had not sold it and that it came with a letter from Cartoon Books. Needless to say that made it a lot easier for me to bid on the piece. The final day of the auction finally came and I really had my doubts that I would get it. I was sure that someone else was going to come in and get my prize since at the time it was the most I had ever thought of paying for a piece but still less than I thought the piece would go for. Much to my surprise I was victorious in the end and one cloud nine the rest of the night. Christmas Eve 2010 will definitely be a day that I will always remember. The piece is everything that I could have wanted and so much more. It has Fone Bone and Thorn and to make the piece even better you have them both holding hands. One thing I absolutely love about this piece is that this image could easily have been ripped directly from the story. It fits perfectly in the sequence where Fone Bone and Thorn are being chased by Rat Creatures with Gran'ma Ben during a storm. During the last few panels in that sequence we see Thorn and Fone Bone holding hands as they get ready to head home except those panels are from a different angles rather than straight one. I couldn't have imagined owning a better piece let alone even owning a piece by Jeff. I am still in complete awe that I actually have a piece by this modern master let alone an actual published piece. This piece will always be one of the main highlights in my collection and one that I doubt I will ever sell. I know if I did sell it I would never be able to replace it with another comparable to it simply because there just aren't that many on the market. I mean when was the last time you saw a piece with Fone Bone and Thorn? And no, sketches don't count. Exactly, they just aren't available which is why this piece will be staying with me as the pride and joy of my collection. It's just the perfect piece and represents everything I love about these 2 characters. I originally thought that the art had only been used for the cover to Complete Bone Adventures 3. It turns out that the piece was also used to make a bookplate to insert in copies of the TPB. I wouldn't have known about the bookplate but I lucked into noticing an unused one listed on ebay. According to Jeff "From the font at the bottom, it must have been a bookplate for the second edition of CBA vol. 3, renamed BONE vol. 3: Eyes of the Storm. It was a fairly common practice in the mid-nineties to make bookplates for specific distributors. My best guess is that this one was either made for Bud Plant or Diamond." Size 4 1/2 x 5 on 8x10 cut art board. Social/Sharing |

Thanks for the kind words everyone. I feel very privileged to be the caretaker of this fantastic piece. It is one of those pieces that is a grail that you think will never be obtainable. I still get goosebumps when I think about actually owning such a great piece by Jeff.
