Description

John Dixon is recognised as a legend in the Australian comics scene having worked on various titles from the late 1940s onwards. However, it was his creation, the adventure newspaper strip Air Hawk and the Flying Doctor which he is largely known for. The strip was published in major Australian newspapers from 1959 through to the mid 1980s. John now lives in California.

I got in touch with John via Nat Karmichael who will soon be releasing Volume 1 of Air Hawk and the Flying Doctor. I asked John if he had any Air Hawk strips available for sale. He said that he preferred not to sell the strips at this time but was happy to present me with one as a gift! I was thrilled by his consideration and generosity and delighted to add this lovely example of John's work to my CAF gallery - thanks John!

Boy, do i envy you, Royd! But only in a friendly way. I was reading John Dixon's Air Hawk strip in the Danish edition of The Phantom magazine back in the 1980's. I lived the strip, and I guess that's what made me fall in love with Australia. Please tell me more about the reprints - you have my mail - and if you like, pass my greetings to John Dixon and thank him for his fantastic adventure strip. It is the work of a man who loves people. Something as unusual as a humanitarian comic strip artist! Thanks, pal.

We've chatted separately about where to purchase the reprints but I had no idea that the Air Hawk strip saw print in the Danish edition of The Phantom magazine!

Actually, The Phantom - for strange reasons - has always been very popular in Scandinavia and in Australia. The rest of the world seems to have forgotten this masked hero. In the long run the Scandinavian Phantom magazine needed filler stories. Air Hawk was a long running such filler - side by side with Torpedo 1936 by Bernet! Strange pairings indeed.
