DescriptionA great page by Jackson (then Butch) Guice from Kull the Conqueror 4 (1984), a great issue with different stories by great art teams.I have been enjoying and following Mr Guice’s career since I discovered his great art and storytelling. However, this is the period in his career to which I respond the most. Firstly because it corresponds to when I discovered him and second because he was then still very influenced by Michael Golden (as he drew during that time). Guice’s (and Golden’s) art was more round and bubbly and I simply loved it. So what I’m basically saying is that the best Guice for me is the 80s period of his art, probably for nostalgia’s sake even though he came much better later (on such titles such as Ruse). Here we have a great page from a story showcasing a truly evil mad king forcing himself on a young prisoner. Again, Guice would get so much better and the art is clunky in place but he did a fantastic job at representing the king as a horrible brute. Look at panel 3 as you really get the impression that it’s a monster, a dragon coming out of his cavern instead of a simple bed. His crouched pose and all conquering body language are impeccable. And the way he drew him forcing himself on her in panels 5 & 6 is again consistent with the character and how he was established earlier. Lastly Guice played his height against the girl’s in panel 4 to great effect. He and his lust are truly towering her. As regards the girl, her fear is shown off panel in panel 2 and gives a lot of impact to the scene and reveal in the next one. Her body language reacting in disgust to him in panel 4 is fantastic. She fights him to the end in panels 5 & 6 and her poses are nicely done. And let’s not forget to mention John Beatty’s lush dark inks here who superbly complement Guice’s pencils. Beatty would do wonder on Golden later on Nam or on Zeck and is also a great match on Guice. For me, a pure storytelling page from a powerful story (if you read it, you know what I mean) and perfect proof that Guice was already excellent when he began in the industry. Social/Sharing |

I loved that issue of Kull with short stories by a lot of talented artists. The Guice story really stuck in my mind as being one of the best. This is great page. Just love how "brutish" the king looks in panel 3.
