DescriptionThis is a commission I had Erik draw for me when he attended one of the local comics conventions in Belgium.I went for the first iteration of the character even if Malcolm Dragon had been introduced at this point because that's the character I «grew up» reading. Because yes, I've been reading Savage Dragon since day one and always enjoyed it a lot. To all the naysayers of the 90s, if you like Kirby('s energy) and well written fast paced super heroes stories, you should read/have read Dragon. If you like Kirkman's writing, the recommendation is the same as he always said that Larsen's Dragon was his main inspiration in his writing. He's drawn in one of Larsen's standard poses, complete with cop gear torn up. The dialogue was asked/suggested by me as I was heart crushed that Erik decided to kill Mako in the book. Mako was a shark based super villain in the book from the early days and I really enjoyed his design and appearances in the series. (Erik later drew me a lil' Mako head sketch to ease the pain ;) Many thanks to Erik Larsen, one of the very best and committed initial Image creators, for the super long chat about comics, OA (as he is a big collector himself), industry gossip, (his) creative process and storytelling. GREAT commission, Fred, bursting off the page with Larsen's fantastic energy and obvious joy of doing comics! And it sounds like you have just as wonderful of a memory of meeting and interacting with Mr. Larsen - that's always so awesome to hear. Congrats on taking home another terrific piece from another terrific meeting with a creator whose work you love - that's ALWAYS a treasure!

Erik's all-time favourite artist is Jack Kirby, so that is precisely why his own work has always been infused with all that Kirby-like energy and dynamic, in your face foreshortening. He has indeed always taken time to speak openly with fans about the industry and has essentially been a de facto "teacher" of sorts to many fans. I respect Erik far more than any of the other artists who left Marvel to start Image, for the reason you mentioned, his commitment. It's incredible to think that he has never let up on Savage Dragon and is still publishing it 30 years later on a monthly basis, with him still handling the creative chores! This is a really superb quality sketch, by the way, with a fun personalization!

It's no secret that he traded his work for Kirby art back in the day and his ongoing series still upholds the bold Kirby storytelling tradition! This has the nice vintage look of earlier Dragon!

Larsen has been one of the best storytellers in the business for a long time. This is a fantastic image of his greatest creation.

I think the best thing about this piece is the nice chat that went along with it. Now you will always have a very special and personal memory to associate with this great piece.
