Description

Details: Signed by the artist, Maurice Sendak. Series limited to 63 + 6 Artist Proofs. This number commemorates the release of the 1963 classic children's book Where the Wild Things Are, by author & illustrator Maurice Sendak.

In 1964 this book was awarded the prestigious Caldecott Medal, and has since gained world-wide acclaim for sparking imaginations and artistic careers. It inspired this sculpture, and a 2009 Warner Bros. feature film directed by Spike Jonze. The release of the film coincides with the Artist's largest one-man show, held at Animazing Gallery in SoHo. Mr Sendak was presented with a lifetime achievement award by the Society of Illustrators during the opening reception on the first of October.

This is the first bronze that has ever been created in collaboration with Mr. Sendak, and each piece bears the signature mark of the Artist. Mr Sendak has the first piece from the series in his personal collection, while the second piece is part of The Rosenbach Museum and Library's permanent collection.

To achieve the highest level of excellence, this sculpture was created with a lost wax process at a New York foundry, where masters have produced work for generations. After cooling, the bronze was embellished with colors via a labor-intensive process involving layers of heat and chemicals, which alter the surface and create a patina. Each piece is numbered & stamped with the signature of the artist.
