Description

Original artwork for Detective Comics #512 (DC - March, 1982), page 12 by Gene Colan (pencils) and Klaus Janson (inks), for the story "The Fatal Prescription of Doctor Death," written by Gerry Conway. This is a very special piece since this two-part story reintroduced Batman's very first "name" villain - Karl Hellfern a.k.a. Doctor Death, who originally first appeared way, way back in Detective Comics #29-30 (July-August, 1939), which was ironically a two-part tale as well entitled "Batman Meets Doctor Death" and "Batman and the Diamonds of Death," written by Golden-Age great Gardner Fox and beautifully illustrated by Batman's creator, Bob Kane. Part 1 of this newer saga entitled, "Calling Doctor Death," was published in Batman #345 (March, 1982), which was concluded in Detective Comics #512, and marked Doctor Death's first appearance since his Golden-Age debut by Bob and Gardner.

This key scene takes place as Batman has finally tracked down Doctor Death to his mansion hideout to confront the evil physician and demand he hand over his Allergen Antidote before he books him for murder one. Darkly dramatic, moody and very atmospheric scene, so reminiscent of Bob Kane's early mysterioso and unforgettable Golden-Age artwork.
