DescriptionOriginal cover artwork for "Weird" Adventure Comics #435 (DC - Oct., 1974) by the legendary Jim Aparo (pencils and inks). Beyond any doubt, one of the greatest Spectre covers of all time, bar none! This spooky scene features a very intense and violent clash between the most powerful and fearsome Champion of Good and a denizen of crime. The Astral Avenger erupts out of a candle flame to materialize and engage a murderous, yet now terrified thug, before he can carry out his nefarious plan upon a beautiful damsel in distress. This cover simply has it all, a great image of the Spectre in full action attacking his adversary, with a babe in bondage in the background and that wonderful unsettling subtitle, "WEIRD" hovering just above the large, Golden-Age logo. This is Aparo art and draftsmanship at it's absolute apex! The Cat's Meow! This cover scene was for the story, "The Man Who Stalked the Spectre," which was written by Michael Fleisher and illustrated by Aparo and featured one of the most chilling, yet memorable storylines from this masterpiece series, which ran from Adventure Comics #431-440 (1974-1975). The Spectre was never more frightening, more intense nor more forceful in fulfilling his divinely decreed mission of eradicating all evil from the face of the planet than in these unforgettable tales of terror. The hero was portrayed perfectly, just as he ought to be; a no-nonsense and take-no-prisoners awesome Avenger of Evil! I could go on and on about how wonderful and great this series is, but for those who have not read these ten issues, you are in for a treat. This truly is a DREAM COME TRUE for me to finally own one of my favorite Spectre covers from his famous Adventure Comics run. My friend and fellow collector Nick Katradis owns the complete story to this issue, and thus, that part of this book is in good hands. A special thank you to another seasoned collector, Nick Barrucci for providing a SPECTRE NUT as myself the opportunity to purchase such a wonderful GRAIL COVER as this! A cover I will treasure for the rest of my lifetime. Social/Sharing |

The Spectre is one of DC's first superheros, dating back to 1940. Its easy to see why he has lasted so long, having appearances in every comic Age. I can see where a Spectre movie would be incredible, if made correctly. This cover embodies all that the Spectre is! Well done Rob!

Rob, a spectacular Jim Aparo Bronze Age masterpiece! The genius that was Aparo is quite evident here! Rest assured that DC has to make a supernatural superhero movie eventually, and the Spectre will be able to make his long awaited appearance as the one and only omnipotent and vengeful superhero!

As I wrote on the previous owner's post, this, along with #436, were the best of the run. Congrats. These Spectre stories were unique for their time.

Oh, I remember buying that book. The Spectre fighting evil by appearing from the flame of a candle! How freakin' cool is that! Congratulations on owning this wondeful piece of comics history.

Can't believe I didn't comment on this before. This is an amazing cover and highly deserving of all the praise. It does what every great cover does which is make you want to read the story inside but it stands on its own and is a one panel advertisement and story in and of itself. Congrats on a spectacular collection!
