DescriptionMeeting and hopefully getting a commission from Clayton Crain was one of the primary reasons I made it to Dallas Fan Days this year. I’ve always liked his cover and interior work but there are no originals available as he does his work digitally. But, I have seen some great commissioned paintings on CAF and hoped to nab one for myself…success!I picked Puma because I’ve always liked the character, and Clayton did some great work featuring him in Sensational Spider-Man #26, part of an arc titled “Feral”. He also did the cover to issue 27, one of my favorite published Crain pieces (I’ve included a pic). I also know Puma’s not requested very much so thought Clayton would get a kick out of doing something a little different…and I was right. Lastly, the character’s colors and the fact that he’s covered in fur I thought would lend to Clayton doing some neat texturing with the paints. Right again! It came out great – love the pose, the grimace, and how you can see the paint strokes…really nice. Thanks, Clayton! Social/Sharing |

Great idea for a commission. I'm glad you were there to watch him paint. His attention to detail and technique can be missed if all you see is a scan or picture. You really appreciate how hard he works when you watch him paint.

It was very cool seeing the colors come into forming the character. Thanks, all, for the comments!

Great looking piece and a unique character choice! It's always a kick to hae a artist do a lesser known character- or one outside their usual request list. I think it's more fun for them too and often leads to spectacular results.

Last time he tackled Puma was during the Feral arc! Thanks for the comment!

I remember really liking this character's look when I was growing up and reading Spider-man comics. Great piece!
