Description

Happy New Year, fellow collectors! I start out new year CAF posts with my first get by an artist and for 2024 we’re startin’ with man-of-the-moment, Daniel Warren Johnson! Havok, commissioned at NYCC 2022.

I had Havok as a character on my commission list but had to be the right artist. When I think “Havok” I think of the uniquely great costume design mixed with ENERGY, his powers being what they are and his personality being what it is. And if there’s an artist you think of when you think “energy”…yeah :)

Alex Summers lettin’ loose. Get the feeling he may have been unfairly imprisoned and is busting out, or maybe busting out a fellow X-Man in the same predicament. Love the depth mixed with straight on perspective, and at the center, the volatile X-Man, with circled plasma blasts emanating out. These dudes having a rough day as a result. Uniquely awesome stuff as only DWJ can bring, particularly packed into a 6x9 board!

Thanks, Daniel, and Felix!

Wow!  Daniel Warren Johnson was definitely the man for the job in this case.  He captures Havok's power and personality PERFECTLY!  Great start to 2024!

Cry havoc, baby!  Congrats on scoring a DWJ, Kahlil, and your instincts on who to go to for a reality-defying explosion of energy in pen and ink were spot-on; a fantastic choice of artist to capture exactly that!  But there's some powerful subtlety at work here, too, with DWJ taking the Neal Adams "Havok circles" and almost hiding them in the piece (via white paint curves through some of the darker areas of the image).  Really nice work (along with "bending" the police officer's night stick).  Great work, and a beautiful way to blast things off for 2024!  Happy New Year, K!

Word on that subtlety!  Havok's costume and how his power is visually displayed...great comics viewing.  I think back to Adams but also the Inferno arc in the X titles, as well as some great cover work, like UXM 249 by Silvestri.  OK...maybe it's time to hunt for a published page :)  Wouldn't be easy!  And good call out on the nightstick bending - didn't see that!  Always appreciate folks commenting on what they see I may not have.  Thanks, Jason!

It turned out great
Daniel's artwork comes through
Here we are, sent by Lu
Feel Havok and feeling true
It's the end of the party
And his anger seems vibrate
So unlike yesterday
Now's the time for posts to say

Happy New Year
Happy New Year
Great Daniel Warren Johnson now and then
In a world where every neighbor loves X-Men
Happy New Year
Happy New Year
May we all have our hopes, our will to buy
Daniel's shown, he might as well lay down the line
Six by nine

I didn't see it but a few have commented on the anime/manga look of this piece, and now that y'all have mentioned...yep, I see it now :)  And yes!  You're welcome for getting this burning question answered ;)  Thanks, DF!

Happy New Year with this wonderful commission piece!   This encompasses Havok in total power surge.  Interesting head interpretation, it feels a bit manga-esque.

A Havok commish as only DWJ can deliver. Poor police officer probably wished he skipped this call. Congrats Kahlil!

I did it, man!  Gettin' tougher and tougher, as you know, so I'm glad to check the box!  Will probably be going for a published example at some point but for now am good, or GREAT, with this "slice"!  Thanks, Nash!

Awesome DWJ piece. Like how Daniel added the cracks/damage to the walls and floor to show Havok's power. Great way to start off the year, congrats.

The Havok image at the center of the piece certainly fulfills the commission request--but it's the horrified/horrifying expression of the guard slumped against the wall that really sets this piece apart for me.

I hear you there.  Horrible day that guy's having, no doubt.  I missed it initially, but Kelsey S above mentioned the famous painting "The Scream" - I see it now :)  Thanks for the add, Mark!

Way to start of the year! Havok was always one of my favorites. It seemed like he had unlimited potential as a character, and DWJ is proving me correct.

Yowza! What a knockout of a Havok illustration! Daniel Warren Johnson has certainly earned his reputation as an arist who can render action like no other. This image of Havok cutting loose is totally awesome! Without even adding a sound effect (Which he does very well when he wants to), DWJ demonstrates the power of Havok's sonic scream by showing the guards actually getting knocked off their feet by the impact of the sound waves, as well as cracks forming in the walls, and the ceiling starting to fall in. Congratulatiions on getting such an amazing commission!
