DescriptionFirst of 2 Ninja Gaiden commission posts today! This was my first mystery sketch request, at the most recent CAF Live, and based on how it turned out I’ll be requesting again. Also click one left and you’ll see through literal luck of the draw I got another commish of Mr. Ryu Hayabusa :)I’ve got a running list of commission subjects, including characters that didn’t originate in comics, and that includes video games. I’m not a big gamer now, but was all about NES as a young’n and one of the games at the top of the list was Ninja Gaiden, namely parts 1 to 3. So got another checked off the list here! This is Ryu in his original duds, more that classic ninja look. Nice details, grey tones, and I love the running pose as that’s how I picture the character when playing the original games :) The background character letters kinda look like the ones on the original NES game but I’m not 100% sure. I gotta check with Emiliano, whose art I was happy to be introduced to through this process BTW, but if anyone’s got any insight, let me know! Thanks, Emiliano, Mark (rep at Splash Page), Bill, and Kasra! Social/Sharing |

Sweet Ninja Gaiden piece dude!! Good idea and great game from back in the day. I remember it being really difficult/hard to play through in full to beat the game though haha.

Yes! Was a toughie but it was doable if you figured out what you needed to as you got some experience. I liked those kinds of NES games, hence loving NG! Thanks, K, and all, for the comments!

Ryu treat me so bad

Oh girl, I loved you but you turned and you talked game play
I would love you for Nintendo though I know I would arcade
Told me Urdinola hurt me, girl, you just lost my ninja stars
Tell me KG, why request it, won't you bring me back some art
I tried to understand it KG, I searched my heart inside my mind
I searched the depths of consoles, KG
There were cut scenes there to find
You told me that sword never leaves me
Girl, cool Emilliano line
Tell me KG, why'd you do it, why'd you make my ninjas slide

I don't get it. All I see is a blank piece of paper.

This could have easily been the packaging art for the game. Glad this worked out so well for you!!!

Great to see you mystery sketch piece make it up. I recall when seeing this in previews, there were a few guesses that this one was yours.

Whatever you do, K-Gear, don't get hit by an enemy because that bounce-back is frustrating!

Oh man....lol...I can still hear the sound...an electronic *DFFZZ* when that bounceback happened! Or that's my best rendition, anyway! Thanks for the add, AND the fun/frustrating memory, BJH!

The only Hayabusa I'm familiar with is the motorcycle, but Frank Miller turned me into a fan of ninjas and this is a nice depiction of one!

The wash he used here gives it the feeling it came right out of fuedal Japan period. It makes a great contrast to the modern costume and art style of the second piece. Great pair! Congrats on both!

Love the detail on the entire piece. I really like the effort done on the legs, feet, and knives!

Wow - although I'm not familiar with the character, the level of touch and detail on the piece are super impressive and a great recommendation of Emiliano's work! The bunched folds of clothing and feet/leggings are -incredible- and the wash work throughout lifts the thing to a whole other level. Really lovely work! And you get to cross something off your list? Sounds like a super fun (and successful) run at a mystery commission! Congrats, K!
