DescriptionSecond of 2 Ninja Gaiden posts today! This was my first mystery sketch request, at the most recent CAF Live, and I was lucky enough to win a spin wheel drawing “potluck upgrade” to have Simone Di Meo take on my commission subject! I still got my commission from Emiliano Urdinola (click one piece to the right) but since I had him do the original NES look for Ryu Hayabusa, I had Simone take on Ryu’s newer look…good decision, right?! Through I haven’t played the games where Ryu is in these duds I still like the look a lot. It's definitely cool seeing these non-comic characters get the comic OA treatment, let alone from a talent like Simone. His rep, Matt Ditullio, told me he was pretty excited to do it and I’d say it shows. When I got this I was like “is this a print?!” Crazy the exactness of the lines and tones, all hand done. Love the depth exhibited with the sword, and in the background, got the pagoda as well as the silhouetted tree line…sublime stuff. And the pose…fierce and ready to literally cut through whatever evil is in his way! Thanks, Simone, Matt, Bill, and Kasra! Social/Sharing |

This goes hard. Simone's work confuses my brain and makes me think it's all digital, which is a testament to his rendering.

Excellent combination of crisp lines with a digital feel, and brush blotted happy little trees. You made the right choice with the upgrade!

Looks it light came straight off the side of an arcade maching cabinet!

The lines are colder now
Maybe I have chose the sword
And anyway the show has covered all your process
And Gaiden follows you some more
Desire still burns at night
My memories are warm and clear
But everybody knows it's hard to Nintendo
At this time of year
I was lucky I got Di Meo
Just a Ninja from Di Meo
And Ryu the world take notice
Of some more love Di Meo
A love Matt could never be
Though it meant a lot to you and me
On a worldwide scale
You’ve got a Ninja from Di Meo

Lol. That hits close to heart right now as I've been in my busiest time of year work-wise for a couple months now but the end is nigh - only 1-2 weeks away...mayhaps I'll try and get one of those boxes that has hundreds of the old NES/SNES games and give NG a go again...if only we had 8 more hours in the day. Then we'd say if only we had 8 more, right?!
Thanks, MW, and all, for the comments!

Ok. Now I see something. Cool trees man. I didn't know you were a dendrophile.

I mean...who DOESN'T appreciate a nice treeline?! I don't know how there aren't more of us out there...
Thanks, JC!

Dynamic and really well done. Both Ryu (Ninja Gaiden) pieces are striking, the first one is a great character card sheet for stats, but this one is stellar and what I would expect to see in a Capcom arcade character card flying to the camera as a special move comes out.

100! Ad, on an arcade cabinet, the title screen before you press "start"...flat out works for 'em all, don't it, JD?! Thanks for the adds, man!

It a really great technique that he uses, making the gray tones so even looking that you can't help but wonder if you just received a one of a kind monoprint!

The words "picture perfect" come to mind. The use of tone and shading make this feel like a graphic that could have been used in the game itself. That background detail goes a long way too! Really nice!

It's so perfect, I kinda thought it might be a print at first too! Such clean lines, so dynamic, and I really like the background building and trees to the left.

This is crazy good. Love the detail of the sword. It draws you to the roof of the temple which is just as fan-freakin-tastic.

A brain-melting level of detail and control here - insanity! Simone almost stuns the viewer by throwing the character right in their face like that, inviting them to dive right in and look at the incredible work he invested into the sword's bell/guard and blade, and the mask and costume... and then see he hid arguably the real power in the background, with the incredible forest and pagoda. Surgically precise; the OA equivalent of a video game fatality - fitting the subject should be from Ninja Gaiden! Grand slam home run of a commission, K! Jackpot royale! Huge congrats on scoring this!

Yeah, man, when I saw it...was blown away by the figure but just as much by the silhouetted trees and pagoda...just complement the overall image too well. I've looked at this one closely a lot, almost not believing it was all hand done! Thanks for the add!
