ComicLink Comments:
Fans of Dave Steven's legendary Rocketeer feature know that the meticulous artist took years to turn out each story, meaning that there are not a lot of pages to go around when it comes to Steven's beautiful original art. Here's a page from Stevens' final Rocketeer story, 1995's Rocketeer Adventure Magazine #3, which came out six years after #2 of the same series. It features Cliff (Rocketeer) Secord on the "House of Death" carnival ride while visiting the boardwalk with a lady friend. The page is filled with a lot of fun details. For this issue, a fellow artistic legend, Michael Kaluta did layouts while Art Adams and Sandy Plunkett also contributed on pencils with Stevens providing all of the inks. We have not been able to verify if this page features Stevens' pencils and inks or just his inks.

Dave Stevens introduced his beloved character The Rocketeer in 1982 in Starslayer #2. A tribute to Saturday matinee serial heroes of the 1930s-1950s, the character was a cult sensation appearing in a small number of stories published by early independent publishing pioneers Pacific and Eclipse. Stevens was a meticulous artist who worked slowly and it took him a few years to complete his initial saga. However, the quality of the work was so superb that fans were fine waiting for the story to conclude. When the initial story was complete, it was regarded as a masterpiece and the story was adapted into a movie by Disney in 1991. Stevens only worked on a few Rocketeer stories after his initial saga was completed.

About the Artist
Rocketeer creator Dave Stevens was a very special talent in our hobby and he passed away way too soon at age 52 in 2008. He left behind a small but highly regarded body of work that is likely only going to be more appreciated over time as new generations discover the tremendous quality of his work.

Michael Kaluta was one of a small group of highly talented and influential young artists to stake their claim in comic books in the early 1970s, bringing a new level of visual maturity to the medium. Despite his talent, Kaluta was not nearly as prolific as many of his colleagues, so consequently his work in general is pretty scarce. In recent decades, Kaluta has been a much in demand cover artist, providing memorable work for DC and the company's adult-targeted Vertigo line.

Everything that Dave Stevens touched was a masterpiece. This page is no exception. What a tremendous piece to be in anybody's collection! Like everyone else, I loved his Rocketeer work. Nice addition.

Thanks Lee! It's got some great detail and I was very happy to win it at auction a few years ago. Every time I look at it I find some additional nuance that I previously missed. I appreciate the kind words.

The imagery of the Boardwalk and the "House of Death" ride (not to mention the panels with Lothar skulking about) is beautifully detailed and atmospheric. The setting is very much in Kaluta's wheelhouse and the Stevens inks are on such a different level from those of mere mortals, it must be a joy to look at up close.

I love the fact that Kaluta have been so sensitive to Stevens style.
