DescriptionBarry Windsor-Smith, Machine Man issue 4 page 17Year: 1985 Dimensions: 10" X 15" 1985, Stunningly Detailed Page Featuring Machine Man in Battle with Iron Man 2020 I remember reading this as a teen and just loving the story and art. I had been watching this piece in possession of a dealer for a few years. When I had the money I happily purchased it. I can't even begin to explain how fantastic this piece looks in real life. Hanging on my wall so I see it every day. --- After taking off several years from comic books to focus on fine art, beloved Conan the Barbarian artist Barry Windsor-Smith returned to Marvel in 1984 to work on a four-issue mini-series revival of Jack Kirby's Machine Man. Windsor-Smith provided memorable covers and finishes for the first three issues, but for the final issue, he did the complete art. Offered here is arguably the best page from that issue in which Windsor-Smith depicts, in his highly unique style, a battle between Machine Man and Iron Man 2020 AKA Arno Stark. With its stunning detail, the page is a great showcase for the evolved style Windsor-Smith brought to comic books following his fine art period, one that would serve him well in later years working on the Origin of Wolverine saga "Weapon X" and as a founder of the Valiant Universe. Machine Man AKA X-51 is an android created by the great Jack Kirby during his mid-70s return to Marvel for 2001: A Space Odyssey #8 (1977). Machine Man was soon spun off into his own Kirby-created series, which ran for 19 issues. The character was revived for the 1984-1985 mini-series featuring this page. Machine Man would later play a key role in the highly successful Earth X series. Iron Man 2020 AKA Arno Stark was a future version of Iron Man created initially for the Machine Man mini-series. He would return in later stories. Barry Windsor-Smith is one of the undisputed masters of the medium and this Machine Man page is a great example of why his work is so coveted. A young Barry Smith first became an industry star with his early 1970s work on Conan the Barbarian. Smith later changed his name to Barry Windsor-Smith and went on to establish himself as a fine artist in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He would later return to comics starting with the Machine Man mini-series and younger generations of collectors know him for his work as one of the co-creators of the highly successful Valiant Comics publishing line in the 90s and the famous Wolverine origin story, "Weapon X". Masterful example from one of my favorite limited series of all times--both for nostalgia but also because I think the story holds up really well. And the art more than holds up, the all-BWS fourth issue is truly a sight to behold. This page shows why--congrats!

"You're just a man pretending to be a robot!" Well, when you put it like that, sure. I love this BWS fight scene between Iron Man and Machine Man. It's a perfect marriage of great writing and art, and I hope to find a page someday, too. So cool. Big congrats!

Oh man, HUGE congrats on this piece, Ed. Color me green with envy, truly. Machine Man is probably what I think of first, along with MCP, when I think BWS and pages like this are why. Just an outstanding example of his control of the story, the illustration, everything. Very, very nice, indeed!

When I first heard BWS was going to be drawing Machine Man, I thought he was so totally the wrong artist for the material. Turns out, I was SOOOOoooo wrong. Machine Man is my favorite BWS work. This page is beautiful.
