Never seen the actual anime, but to 70's kids, this skull torso is very recognizable and nostalgic as a Shogun Warriror. One of the prime pages showing him getting powered up!

I had to look it up. Both were of the same time period as animes in Japan. Mattel marketed both in the US as part of their Shogun Warrior series at the same time too. So they were more contemporaries than any historical lineage. Of course, Goldorak was created by Go Nagai, a much more important and influential creator than Yuji-san.

Grendizer/Goldorak was/is not that well known or popular in Japan as compared to his big bros Mazinger or Getter. It's mostly the popularity of the (then) cheap licence exported to Europe that drove it into the spotlight.
