Description

I am so thrilled to own this piece. It is really a dream come true. My love for Milton Caniff's Dragon Lady is no secret nor is my absolute adoration of the art of Milo Manara. I vividly remember the first time I saw his art in Heavy Metal Magazine and how it and that publication changed my world. I have read and collected just about everything Manara related I could find and have been lucky to have owned over a dozen pieces by him. Many I regret parting with but also a collection I still have that feels rather complete with works from different periods in his career including some key pieces from the early 80's. This piece is like the cherry on top. The image above is from a digital pic as it is too big for my scanner. There is a bit a roll to the paper so a bit of distortion is created on the girls coming down the stairs.

The composition of this piece is a homage to a print(circa 1940) Caniff made of the Dragon Lady serving a speechless Pat and Terry dinner. They are sitting with their mouths open as a train of topless servers brought them a feast. The Dragon Lady asks "Why do you gentlemen not eat your food? Is something too spicy? ". A similar panel is revisited by Caniff in 1943 for a special Terry and the Pirates strip done for the Military that would later evolve into his Male Call series. Manara kept the same color palette as the Caniff piece but took a different perspective on the room. Caniff would create these prints, hand color and personalize them and send them to fans. Although the print is very well known, I can only confirm that three copies of the print exist. There is likely a few more out there but still a rare treasure in its self.

There is an interesting back story behind the creation of this piece but it is a story better told over beer or wine and in person so ask me in person sometime in the future. The whole experience of getting this piece was fantastic and involved a studio visit and lunch with the Milo and his wife in fair Verona.

An excellent example which - since it is by Manara - amazingly takes one right back to the Caniff source material.  Of course it is from a different angle, and hence more "graphic" in the erotic sence whilst Cainff's is more graphic in the design sense.  This is a piece for YOU Jeff, and I hope we will get a full account of the story behind the piece in the CFA-APA!

It is, at once, a beautiful piece of art, a fantastic tribute to Caniff and a pure hit of Marara. Score! One day when the world finally returns to some semblance of the old normal and we are able to find ourselves in close proximity, I'll buy the beers and you can tell this story.
