Description

A couple of episodes prior to this one, Danny Franks finds himself asking "Why aren't you mad, Mad Tommy?" And throughout the entire series, everyone (reader and character alike) wants to know "What's in Kano's black box?" Well, Tommy said he'd explain everything - and here, that's exactly what he does. The story's consistent theme of trying to hold onto your humanity during the horror of war is made quite literal in Kano's case - whether or not he ultimately succeeds is open for debate. I think this extremely Kano-centric page is the first in my collection to actually feature the black box itself, though the standout panel is probably the last one - Ewins and McCarthy combining their talents to lethal effect to illustrate the embryonic Bad Company.

Thanks to Dale Jackson for letting this one go.

I always found the bit where Tommy first lays eyes on the butchered Kano very chilling - possibly the best set of 'zoom' panels in the story, as Tommy tries to take in what he sees.
