DescriptionIf you have followed my gallery at all, you know that I am a fan of Sal Buscema and consider him to be the greatest Hulk artist to draw the character, and my personal favorite artist. I discovered Sal’s art via Hulk issue 227 and forward as new issues, and his issues published previously via my local LCS. As I collected these issues, I came to appreciate the image of Hulk in the upper left hand corner and it came to be THE image of the Hulk for me as it graced the Hulk covers from issue 196 through issue 290. Sal started drawing the Hulk series with issue 194 and not shortly thereafter, this art was the new corner box art for the title. I can only imagine that Sal was asked to draw the new image to grace the covers for his upcoming and legendary run on the title. Whoever the editor who asked Sal to draw this image … I am eternally grateful. The art for this image was used for more than just the Hulk corner box on the title’s covers. Hulk was a primary artist for Marvel marketing and merchandising in the late 70s and 80s and this image was used heavily during this time. At some point, an alternate head was drawn for this image by John Romita Sr. to match the house look that was being used by Marvel at the time. John Romita Sr. drew or re-drew many faces and other imagery to achieve a consistent look per the direction of Marvel editorial. I have been searching for the original artwork of this image since the day I started collecting art. I have never heard of any instance of the original art being shared so I fear it might not have survived. I still look for this art (please let me know if you are aware of it) but decided a while back that I would love to have Sal recreate the art as the next-best-thing to owning the original. I was able to add this piece to my collection through Sal’s art rep Scott Kress at Catskill Comics. When Scott set up the commission, I asked if Sal would draw the piece as he drew it in his original instance, with the head as he first drew it. Sal graciously agreed and the result absolutely and far exceeded my expectations. This oversized piece of art was the first piece to be framed and on the wall. To say I am happy to own this piece is a gross understatement. Major thanks to both Sal and Scott! Extra images include Sal’s original imagery, John Romita Sr version with alternate head, framed art, and merchandising example. Social/Sharing |

Straight to the point and very direct! Sal Buscema shows what we expect and what we want for a timeless classic image.

You know I love this and I bet its massive image is even more impressive in person and on the wall! Great choice going with the original portrait.

Thanks TC, I know you are a big fan of this image as well. Original portrait was never even a choice really. I knew I wanted this from the day decided to get one made. Thanks!!

I hope you are lucky enough to find the original someday. But that certainly doesn't mean you can't enjoy this piece every day for the rest of your life. Congratulations on a very special commission.

Really great idea for a commission. My appreciation for Sal Buscema just keeps growing as time goes by (and I say this as someone who wrote a complaint letter to Marvel in 1996 when Sal stopped doing Spectacular Spider-Man because I wanted him back on the book).

I wrote a similar letter many times when Sal left the Hulk. The only problem is that I only wrote them in my mind and never put pen to paper and sent to Marvel. There is a brotherhood of Sal Buscema fans who feel the pain of him leaving our favorite book(s). I stand in solidarity with you!

Nice choice, and a great image as others have said. It takes you right back to the excitement of finding the comics on a newsstand or in a box in a comic shop.

The man will simply never lose his talent. He just keeps putting out this fantastic, high-quality work. That's a great quest to have, but how cool is it that you were able to get him to even recreate his original process? And it looks awesome. Good luck on the quest, but I think you found yourself something to tide you over a bit. :) Big congrats!

Sal's level of skill still on display is absolutely remarkable, I totally agree - he hasn't shown any signs of slipping! Thanks for the well wishes as well - this will certainly fill the void to a great degree if I am never able to find the original art. I feel extremely fortunate as shortly after this was completed, I believe it has been announced that Sal might not be doing larger and/or complex commissions any longer.

Oh, great get, Dave, pulling at them nostalgic strings :) Most of us remember this corner image/pose distinctly, and if you the original art doesn't exist or can't be found, this will work just fun in its stead I'm sure. Big congrats!

How have I not commented on this piece. I am blaming my jealous of it. Also love the frame up.
