DescriptionAnother Heroes Con pickup and my first piece from Mark Buckingham! Got to chat with him for a bit…talk about a NICE guy.I was flipping through his art and this was about half done. Was a piece he was doing on the plane ride to Heroes and I asked if he would finish it, which he obliged. Had a feel I was vibin’ right away. Mark’s got this style that has a classic throwback quality while still feeling modern at the same time. The half Spidey/half Pete head shot is one of my favorite comic tropes that we don’t see enough of today. Check out these con sketches I’d been doing over the years and hope to try to get back into : https://www.comicartfans.com/galleryroom.asp?gsub=146287. So there’s that. But then this one here looks like early Pete from the ‘60s where he’s just gotten started as Spidey and I love that about it, too. AND there's Doc Ock! I thought about maybe getting a blue line copy inked as a side-by-side but I’m not sure if it needs that. Looks good as is, but we’ll see. I had to leave the con earlier on Sunday so thanks to fellow collector bud E. C. for picking it up from Mark! Social/Sharing |

Nice alter ego shot of the true one and only Spider-man. Love it.

Mark's one of (if not THE) nicest guy in comics. His Spidey run with Jenkins was top notch and this is very reminiscent of that. Congrats!

Ev'ry line half Peter's face,
It reminds me spider senses and tentacles.
But all I got is a photograph
And I realize you're Mark Buckingham, I adore.
I thought you'd sketch it the day I went away,
But E.C. ships it
Till it comes home always to stay.
I can get used to pencilling here,
While I'm artwork broke, leave here or inks on blue.
I want you here alter ego,
As the years go by and we pencil it grey.

That's neat! This looks spot on like a companion piece that Mark painted for me a few years ago. But with Gobbie instead of Doc Ock! Nice one!

Ha ha, yup, them's very similar :) It is cool to see that image again in colors! Glad you like the this one in pencil, and congrats again on yours.
Thanks, Killian, and all, for the comments!

The thing about these half and half drawings is that they're usually just of the head and nothing else. You got lucky in that he was working on a 3/4 body piece and also has the hint of Dock Ock tentacles added for extra drama. Excellent piece!

The split costume/alter ego thing seems to be uniquely iconic to Spidey and I've always loved it. I can't think of seeing half-faced Steve Rogers or Bruce Wayne or Tony Stark, but I can immediately think of several iconic Peter Parkers. This is a cool image and the little touches (Doc Ock off panel, the camera) enhance the fun of it.

It is pretty unique to Pete, no doubt. In recent years in Black Panther, they've had his mask come over in a Kirby tech-y way, and that actually kind of reminded me of it, at the point where the mask is halfway on. Not the same thing, but similar. I got a Stelfreeze commission of that masking up look and been using it as my avatar :) Thanks for the add, man, and was great catching up for a bit at Heroes!

pretty nice pencils man!! good call asking him to finish it. personally I'm also a big fan of the half Peter half Spidey "look" - I asked Ottley to do that for me when they put him on ASM at a show like 6 years ago, need to get a good scan of that

Buckingham had an underrated run on Spidey in my opinion. This sketch is a nice example of his work. Like the Doc Ock details he added to this piece.

I always loved it when Perer Parker's spidey-sense went off and Ditko or Romita would depict that with wiggly lines and a split Spider-Man/Peter Parker face. So I was totally delighted to see Mark Buckingham's version--This time with the split image being of their WHOLE BODIES! I've never seen that before! I love Mark's style here, very old school! Even the camera Peter's holding is old school! Great touch adding a couple of Doc Ock's tentacles into the corners! What an amazing pick-up, serious congrats!

I love this piece. As you said it has a very classic look that makes it amazing. If I have to tink about a half Sipdey half Peter headshoot the image that comes to my mind is that. This is one of my goals as a collector... to find a page with this image.... I know exactly which one I want... I don't know if I will be lucky enough to find it... YOU HAVE YOURS!!! Huge congratulations!

I have a number of non-published sketches but yet to get that published piece...OK, I'm on it :) Need to check that box! I hope YOU hit your target, man. If anyone can make it happen...
Glad you like and thanks for the add!

I don't own any but you can't go wrong with the half Spidey/half Peter approach indeed.
That tiny Ock is a fun touch :)

This is such a cool piece! I too love the half & half Spidey sense face. But I don't really recall seeing full body half & half all that much, so it really makes this one distinct and memorable. That Doc Ock reflection is sweet too. Whole thing reminds me of ASM #55, with the POV reversed.

With all due respect to the others, this one tops your convention sketch gallery. I love the camera lens detail.
