DescriptionI traded this piece of great looking art, which was painfully tough, to add something new to the collection.Gary who? Frank who? I don't care who it is, they can't replace Dale Keown and I am not going to like the art. These were the thoughts going through my head when I heard about Gary Frank replacing Dale Keown as the regular artist on the Hulk series after Dale left. I was not a happy Hulk collector at the time. That said, I am extremely glad that Marvel selected Gary Frank to follow Dale as his art was a great transition and made for a great continuous visual for the arc going forward. Gary really excelled at drawing the Smart/Merged/Professor (or whatever descriptor you prefer) Hulk, especially in the massive and muscled look paired with the more intelligent looking face. Gary Frank's run was outstanding and kept up well with Peter David's excellent writing at the time. This page checked many boxes for a GF Hulk page, especially the great face close up shot. So happy to have this in the collection. Big shout out of thanks to PA for the chance at the page - much appreciated my friend! Social/Sharing |

Good selection, Dave. I remember having those same thoughts re: Frank replacing Keown. Oh well it seems to have worked out fine for Gary!

Frank and Smith was a terrific pairing. There were no gaps in the art and they were able to get more facial expression into the story for more visual fun. Still a big powerhouse and having big action moments like this, Hulk became one of the flagship titles based on David's long tenured writing and artists like Keown and Frank to keep the monster in check. This page design with the Hulk leaping northwest creates a balance with the panel breaks below.

Thanks Marcus, totally agree - this page layout was done very well. This and the closeup shot sold the page for me.

Agreed, Keown was nearly impossible to follow but GF was the best to do it. I think I've said it before but it's funny how both their styles have evolved so much after their 90s run on the Hulk books. But these pages always still hit that sweet spot for me. Great pickup Dave!

Yep, peak period for both in terms on my personal preference as well. They both are still at the top of their game(s) and cranking out amazing art but my hearst still yearns for more of these pages - probably nostalgia calling out to me!

Really nice example from Gary's period and I 100% agree with your description as I also was sad and very sceptical when Dale left his Peter David Hulk run for the unnecesary Image "Pitt" nonsense :)

As transitons go for artistic teams, the Keown to Frank one was perfect. I mean, I wanted more Keown but it really didn't take long for Frank to work things out and carry on the greatness. Love me the Peter David run! Oh and yeah, this page is cool.

Congrats on the pickup! As much as I liked Keown's work on Hulk, I actually think I preferred Gary Frank a little bit. I think the writing and art were really in sync during this period. I still need a nice Gary Frank Hulk page in my collection, but it'll happen eventually.

AS a teen I would try to decide who I favorited between Keown and Frank and couldn't decide. Lovely page.

I was all, "oh, no, he went there," but then you pulled the old narrative switcheroo, and I went "phew, all is well." Heh, I was shocked when Keown was switched off, too. I loved his run so much, but then there was Frank, continuing the awesome. Hulk has been blessed with amazing artists who bring their A game. Kind of like another green character, that's just a bit more swampy. Some guys get all the luck. Maybe it's the green? What a great Frank Hulk battle page. Big, green congrats!

Really, really, enjoyed Gary's run. And I agree completely with your description. I was a huge fan of Keown's run, but wasn't all that familiar with Frank. But by Gary's second issue, I was all in. Just couldn't get enoug (which is how I ended up with a half dozen covers at one point). I loved Cam's inks on him, and wish they had remained a team after they left Hulk. Gary is of course inking himself these days, and it looks great. But I do greatly miss the Smith inks. A great page from a great run. Congrats!

Thanks brother, man I wish I had been collecting back then. I'd have given you a run for your money on the Keown and Frank Hulk covers.

I'll admit that I dropped the Hulk comic when Keown left because I wouldn't accept that anyone could replace him. The folly of youth! I went back a few years later and picked up all of the great Frank issues that I missed. Excellent page by one of the great Hulk artists (even if I was too dumb to appreciate it at the time).

Stunning Incredible Hulk page by Barry Frank and Cam Smith! Especially love that second panel with the Hulk leaping into the sky before being dragged back down! Great pick-up!

Frank had a tough act to follow but he made the most of it, didn't he? The guy is ta-len-ted! Sweet action page here with a leaping Hulk and a sweet close up head shot. Congrats, Dave!

Mannn...this Hulk UK adventure was a fun ride! Gary Frank holds such a special place for me because he helped pick up the pieces of my broken heart after Keown left (don't get me started on those Duursema fill-ins). Love it!
