DescriptionI picked this up from Alex at Fan Expo Dallas 2015. I liked it as soon as I saw it, and wanted it more when I realized it was kinda rare. Alex said that he hadn't done a full blown version of Spider-Man (my fave character) in awhile, and actually had only done a handful altogether - that does seem the case as this is the only Spidey of its type by Alex here on CAF. With the price tag, though, I wasn't 100% sure so slept on it. I don't pick up much non-published work these days outside of my own commissioned requests. I woke up the next day feeling surer about getting it...just hoped no one else had. I got back to Alex's table, we negotiated a bit, and I took it home!Definitely happy with my decision. To me this piece is all about the color work, like a lot of Alex's pieces here on CAF. It's mostly watercolor, but he also uses pen and pencil, maybe some other paint media too. I love the varying shades of red on the mask and torso - Alex is one of the best at highlighting varying degrees of the same color. I REALLY like the eyes, and how he used orange to show the lens sheen. The fact that you can just barely make out the buildings in the background adds to the organic feel of the piece. Lastly, it's BIG - a 16x22" swingin' Spidey! Hopefully most of that description comes through in the posted image...I had to take a pic as it's way too big for my scanner! 10/12/16 Update: I was at the comic store this past Saturday and just happened to see this image on a Spidey action figure card – pretty cool surprise! Neat to see what I thought was strictly a specialty piece show up as published. I'm pretty sure Alex did, too, but I imagine Marvel came calling...so there you go! I’ve included an image. Oh yeah man, this is so great!! Maleev in fine form. I feel like Spidey is a tough character to pull off in a commission... His full costume doesn't allow much playroom and the webbing often looks weird. I'm still looking for a Spidey commission for my collection. I would be stoked if this was this one commission. What I'm getting at: great score, dude! Big congrats!

This is great. He said he hates drawing Spidey due to the webbing, so it is indeed rare!

That's gorgeous. I wish that Alex would paint a full Spidey comic.

This is fantastic. I love Maleev's ability to create mood but this is a showcase of his talent to do a vibrant, Spidey-centric image! Bravo!

I really don’t know how that’s possible either, Vale...but better late than never I guess ;) Agreed that this could make a cover (not biased or anything!) but at least someone did realize it should be published. I picked this up before I, or artist Maleev, knew that it would be used for toy packaging. I believe they commissioned him to do a line of characters for the toys and he probably figured he already had a nice Spidey, so there you go! Or, maybe he didn’t feel like drawing Spidey again (not a fave for him), or maybe both! Haven’t confirmed since I haven’t seen him since I bought it...but I plan to at some point! Thanks for the comment, Vale - though late, I’ll take it ;)

Gracious, but that is one AMAZING Spider-Man (er... you know what I mean. :) ). I can only imagine the colors and size of this thing in-person... It must take your breath away. EXCELLENT piece; a true gem among your wonderful collection (which is littered with gems :) )! I can only imagine the thrill of looking around at your comic book store and seeing your piece looking back at you. Sweetness! :)

Thanks a lot, Jason - really do appreciate the comment on this piece as well as the rest of my collection! I've had a heckuva time putting it together! And you're right, this was my one experience seeing an original piece I have show up published when I didn't know it was...I was just a littie excited, to say the least :) Thanks, again!

You are absolutely correct about how Alex over-layers the same colors to make such an indelible impression with his work. I love his compositional skills, and marrying that with his sense of color scheme and watercolor virtuosity, his work speaks to me like few others' do. I love the 'washed out' cityscape (more of that layered watercolor) which is more suggested or implied than defined; it 100% serves the piece. All you need is the peripheral sense of the shapes because you SHOULD be focusing on Spidey.
(Or, y'know the action figure in the box. :) )
