DescriptionI started off my 2016 CAF posting RIGHT with my first Art Adams piece and in accordance I’m ringing in 2017 with my first Dale Keown piece! And a cover. And featuring a top character for me in Black Panther (BP). And by Dale Keown…I said that already. Excited to be posting this!I don’t buy variant cover art that often but when I saw the published image I contacted Dale’s dealer, Gin, straight away. When it became available he got back to me and I jumped at it. The scan is solid but the piece is really killer in person. Cool how big BP is here and I like when artists can take simpler costume designs and really make them pop. Case in point here by Dale as BP’s all black costume is really accentuated by the detail in musculature as well as the grey tone work done via pencil. Also cool that he’s riding a sky cycle, and oddly enough, this is my second BP cover where he’s on a flying bike! I’m pretty sure I’ll be framing this, probably alongside the published cover. The colors look nice, but it’d be cool to display the art alongside the published image because you do lose some of the tone/shading work Dale did when the colors are added. Makes you appreciate the original that much more. The first 3 covers I ever bought were of BP from BP titles so I’m glad to add this one to my collection of pieces featuring one of my favorite heroes, 2nd if I had to rank. Also, check the new series out by Coates and Stelfreeze it’s good! I’m glad that BP is getting some well-deserved pub these days and I am REALLY looking forward to the solo film next year. Thanks, Gin and Dale! Social/Sharing |

What a killer piece. The greytones and white highlights really make this standout. Congrats!!

Outstanding cover! I wouldn't be picky just because it is a variant cover. God knows who decides what is the main cover and what the variants are. Sometimes I even find the unpublished covers (e.g. of Mignola) more compelling then the one that found its way to be the published cover. This here is truely a gem!

I've been picking up a few more original variant covers purely because of how much I like the art/image. I tend towards the main covers because of how many, though less these days, incorporate the narrative of the storyline. You'll see from my gallery I'm coming around, though! Thanks for the comment!

Like Tommy, I'm also not a big fan of Keown's work after McLeod stopped inking him on The Hulk, but I'm really happy to see he managed to pull back on this piece and gave BP the proper size and body structure. Really nice piece. I just got a first Black Panther piece this month myself!

But when I saw this BP image, it was one of those rare times where I just immediately thought "gotta have it"! Of course some of that has to do with it being BP but mostly it's because it's just a great illustration. To your point, he really worked out the proportions and musculature and the shading looks awesome as a result. Thanks for the comment, Ruben, and congrats on your first BP piece - I venture to say it won't be your last!

I love Keown's recent work (not that I don't like his earlier stuff). Particularly how he adds pencil tones to the inked image. That is something that would have been a disaster in the early days of comic book publishing but with modern printing it comes out nicely. Personally I am fond of variant covers as they give a chance for some of my favorite artists to appear as guests artists for titles they are not currently working on. Anyway congrats on a superb piece of art.

Can't go wrong with a Dale Keown cover, especially not of Black Panther! I haven't had the pleasure of meeting Dale yet but agreed, Gin is awesome to deal with. Congrats!

Love that there's not much background. Makes Black Panther really stand out. Usually, Keown puts a very detailed background. If he would have put in a jungle background (which most people would have done), the character would have been lost. Great if BP wants to hide, bad for a cover that wants to get people's attention. Great cover!

Now I do have a Dale Keown piece myself and I can confirm he is a super talented artist. The strength and power of BP are so vibrant there !
Even if the mad Titan beats him on the cover I have 😜😜😜

Yeah, man, glad you got your piece - welcome to the club :) Still love this BP image. And yeah, on your cover, Thanos may have gotten the upper hand in THAT battle...but the war...not so sure ;) Thanks, man!

No, not yet! I moved a couple years ago and lost my go-to framer. Haven't prioritized finding a new one yet but I will. Got a few more pieces I need to adorn the walls with :) Though I must say it still is nice to hold them in hand and pore over them. Whatever I do frame I'll get pics up on CAF. Thanks, John!

Well; I'm sure overdue comenting on this little masterpiece. I always
loved The Black Panther's design. Just all black to match both his
namesake, and the night. Kirby did a great job designing the character.
Althogh I'm glad they soon dropped the cape aspact of it. And the Dale
Keown cover is truly a masterpiece to this ebduring Marvel superhero.
"BRAVO", my friend. This is a score to rival the gods.

Does it get better? BP standing there, telling you he's ready for you too? Dale Keown, inking his own work...That guy has been through personal as well as personal turmoil, and you can actually see his "I survived, who/what's next?" in this cover. Just really a precious gem here!!!
