Description2nd of my last 2 Panther posts of 2020 – an outstanding mixed media cover from Mr. Jorge Molina! I won this about a month back via NYCC charity auction benefitting St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. I’ve got a couple nice Molina pages of the traditional black/white ink variety but have been on the lookout for the right piece at the right price in the mixed media vein. Been seeing pieces on CAF, published and not, where his tonal and/or color skills impressed me to say the least. Now, I got mine! And featuring one of my main guys in the Panther. Got pencil, pen, markers, and acrylic.First, great layout. Perfect for a team book cover and it has a montage-y movie poster feel. The 5 characters featured (BP, Agent Roz Solomon, Fat Cobra, Broo, and Man-Wolf) are so different in design it’s cool seeing Molina’s different takes on them. Gotta love the pose choices, too. Second, tonal GOODNESS! Molina had a chance to show out and he really did. Each character’s got different textures to them so that lends to it – costume, skin, hair, and…alien skin with Broo, I guess? Maybe exoskeleton? Also gotta say again that I love seeing how artists can make a full all black costume pop – see all the shades of grey/white on BP here. Very nice. I think going with a greyish brown paper board helped that, too. My 2nd Agents of Wakanda cover (check out the other by Humberto Ramos) – we’ll see if it’s my last :) Thanks for looking! Great cast of characters! Which one is Fat Cobra again? Haha, jk. Such great use of textures all around. Molina really did make each character artistically distinctive, and the image as a whole is so crisp and clean looking. Agent Roz Solomon has a lovely JS Campbell feel to her, and Man-Wolf totally rocks. Ya gotta wonder who or what Broo is leaping off of (love his expression). Of course, BP is the star of the show, as he should be. Fantastic addition!

As far as which one Fat Cobra is? Comics does have a history of having many character names be reflective in some way of said character's design and/or power set. So...yeah, lol ;) BP was obviously the main draw for me here but great points regarding the others. And being a big Spidey fan...always had a soft soft spot for Man-Wolf. The large head shot took it over the top. Roz and Broo (just a wacky fun character) are nice bonuses. Appreciate the comments, Paul and all! Oh. That rhymes :)

Nice pickup, K! Molina's stuff has caught my eye lately, and this piece is full of intrigue - makes me want to hunt down the issue and read the series. Congrats!

As far as his stuff catching your eye...was the same for me. He's definitely versatile in terms of media use and getting better on these types of mixed media pieces. And regarding this page making you want to read the book?! Probably the best comment you can make for a cover, right?! Doing it exactly what it's supposed to do :) Thanks!

I saw the thumbnail and thought, "KG went and bought himself a Fables cover!", then clicked on the thumbnail and realized it was definitely NOT a Fables cover! Really beautiful, and it's so interesting to see how different this is to what Molina was doing just a few years ago!

Fat Cobra = $$$
Great looking cover! I am always a fan of tonal work because they look terrific as originals.

Personally I generally don't care much for comic art done tonally. IMO they rarely succeed combining the more stylized look comic art requires with the realism tonal art generally brings out. But that is not the case in this piece by Molina. Perfect balance to create a truly beautiful comic image. Congrats on a truly superior comic book art.

Replying here to you, Harry, and to Chris Snorek. Tonal work..totally depends on the the piece. To your point I've seen some pieces that look straight up overrendered, i.e., too much going on/being packed in that it kind of takes away. Or a lot of tonal work done on a piece that's just not fundamentally there from a layout, composition, and or/figure perspective. But there other times that the balance is on point...like here! When it works it WORKS. Thanks, gents!

I loved this series and wish that it had lasted longer! I love this whole cover, but Molina's Man-Wolf is definitely my favorite part! Congrats!

Man, even with the 'head start', I'm still having trouble finding the words... :) This one is so, SO good. It has the 'sheen' of an Adi Granov piece, but a composition and execution all its own. This piece and your Sentinels by Molina (LOVE that one) really have made me reassign his status in my artist worldview. He's a great talent, and I thank you for opening my eyes wider to that fact. Great pick up! If your 2020 Panther Postings end on this note, it is a very, VERY fine note indeed! (And welcome back! We missed you here on CAF the last few weeks! :) )

Yes! Another reason I picked this up! FIRST appearance of the Fastbroo Special! Absolutely :) Paul - you were wondering what was up with Broo - there it is! Appreciate the comments, man. I do think Molina has really improved over the years - seeing so many good pieces these days. Case in point with this - hits on all cylinders! And yep, glad to be back to CAF with a couple posts. As busy as things get, gotta find time to get back to some OA :)

I love the original so much and I like the final color version as well. It's great because both feel connected but also stand on their own. Molina is just so talented and definitely a star. This is a perfect addition to your collection!

Willing to bet this looks unbelievable in person! Really dig how some of these guys are mixing it up with the paper and other media beyond the board-and-ink norm. Another stunning addition an already undefeated BP collection!

Fantastic! I love how Molina's design gives this cover a great kinetic energy. The way he's posed each character leads to the feeling of the characters in motion when I move my eye from top to bottom.

I think I may have gotten a sense of that but didn't really realize it until you outright noted it here, George! The layout/poses do provide a sense of movement but I didn't realize that you kinda get the max effect as you work your way down the image, which is also moving from back to foreground. Good eyes, brother :) Thanks!
