Description

Last 5 years I’ve started out January posting my first piece by a new artist in my gallery so I’m keeping that going here with my first from Julian Totino Tedesco! Been wanting to get more art featuring Marvel Native American characters so I’m happy to check Julian off the collector list with this Red Wolf cover!

I’ve liked Tedesco’s cover work for a bit, and a lot of that has to do with pieces posted on CAF, particularly from the collections of buds “George H” and “Alex N” – check out their Tedesco pieces, and their whole galleries, while you’re at it! Tedesco does work in lotsa different media, including being MEAN when slingin’ that graphite. He’s a great pure illustrator, and can go from cartoony to super realistic and everything in between. He’s also got a strong graphic design sense, lending to some uniquely cool images.

Like this one! At first glance it does have a little of a prelim-y feel (he drew in pencil and digitally painted – see additional published image), but in person the pencil lines are clearly really deliberate, and the roughness of the pencils work for the gritty scene. And it feels like he knew exactly what he wanted to do and had no problem executing without having to redraw or touch up. An overall nice composition and some great figure work, particularly on Red Wolf and the biker that flew off his bike. Gotta dig the Old West meets Mad Max vibe :)

The only thing that kept me from getting it originally was Red Wolf’s lasso wasn’t pencilled on the board – Julian added that digitally. But the art just didn’t look right without it. So I asked his dealer (Chiaroscuro Studios) if he’d be willing to pencil it in – he was and he did! Done deal!

As always, thanks for looking, and I hope 2022’s treating y’all well so far!

Frankly I am not a big fan of pencil art, but I will make an exception in this case. Beautiful and dynamic. Congrats.

So excited to see a Tedesco piece on CAF, and this is fantastic!  I became a big fan of his through his penciled cover work on Web Warriors (I managed to pick up some of those covers, which I need to post at some point).  Love the Old West meets Mad Max vibe that you mentioned.  I think it's so cool that you were able to get Julian to pencil in the lasso.   Brilliant addition!!

Thanks for the shout out my friend and major congrats on this one. You know I've been a long time advocate for Tedesco's work and it's easy to see why, especially with your description. I mean this has a ton of energy and not only did he draw a horse he drew motorcycles! Not easy to draw either. Love seeing the lasso in there. Congrats!

Of course, brother! Your Tedesco collection is second to none and I like that you've got the whole gamut of different media examples in it. Thorough you were - little Yoda spin there :) And yes! I've heard from mulitple artists that horses and vehicles, bikes specifically, ain't easy to draw! For the latter, I've heard it from a couple guys when they were first drawing Ghost Rider WITH the bike. "Man, didn't realize it'd be this tough til I started drawing" :) Thanks, man!

Really nice looking piece. By all rights, this IS the very definition of "preliminary". Any time a piece of art is done in different stages and in different media, the initial layout is the preliminary piece. All that means is that it is the first pass for what will eventually become, at least in this case, the finished digitally produced piece. But unlike traditionally produced pen and ink pieces where the preliminary layout is used as a guide to produce the finished pencilled and inked piece, this is (I assume) the only hand illustrated part that exists of the finished cover. So whether it is of a rougher, preliminary stage drawing or a tighter, more finished piece, it is the "original cover art" regardless. As long as you enjoy it, be proud of it regardless of the level of finish. And I know you ARE proud of it.

That being said, I'm sorry to inform you that I will be reporting you for discrimination. ALL Native Americans in comics should be collected equally. I'm sure you can find some lovely DC Native Americans if you tried hard enough! In fact, it shouldn't actually be hard at all, as there was once a very well regarded SIXTY ISSUE LONG series published by DC under the Vertigo imprint that was ALL ABOUT Native Americans, who are now feeling very discriminated against by one of their own due to his fanciful loyalty to the House of Lame Ideas. All Hail DC!

Yeah, man, agree as far as "prelim" comments. Appreciate your thoughts! Not AS clear as this is the only physical art, but, so much of the "finished" piece was done digitally. As you note, though, as long as you dig it...that's it.

On the DC note...so...there are more Native characters than just Apace Chief? ;) Oh and I know the series you're talking about...got the trades here...I may yet get a piece at some point. But yes, alas, more focus would be on the Marvel characters. I know. SO lame.  I've tried to quit and leave...but can't. When I see and consider the alternative...I just turn right back around ;)

Lol, appreciate your comments as always! And watch out! I do got some stuff from "that other publisher" coming :)

I'd add that Julian does do preliminary drawings for his covers. Generally they are quick digital thumbnails similar to the prelims that have been popping up from classic cover artists. Even though they are aren't super tight, this is in fact the finished pencils. I wouldn't call this a prelim by any means and since no inks exist and the color/painting was done digitally this is it for an original for this cover.

Thanks, man - more info to get a more informed view. I do get what Ruben's saying, but also got you here, too. You're stating it's a finished piece (pencil or ink), with colors added digitally afterward - like basically all comic art is done today. Makes sense. Especially as he does tried and true rough prelims for his covers, which I didn't know. I guess the fine line was how much additional rendering goes into the colors? I do indeed see it as the final pencilled published OA, as I traditionally don't buy prelims, and definitely didn't consider that to be the case with this pick up!

Red Wolf was at one point an Avenger and had his own series.  I remember seeing one of those 70's covers and it had a large price tag in Lira so people in Turkey loved these Wild West comics and loved the art.  This is a great update of the look and set in the WWI time period.  Tedesco draws this action cover with directional momentum that peel off in unexpected directions.

Hey, Marcus, love learning something new every day, particularly when it comes to comic OA. Hmph, didn't mean for that to rhyme, but OK! Like your "unexpected directions" comment - totally agree, and adds to the appeal! Thanks!

It WOULD have been a strange cover without the lasso. Cool that he was amenable to it. Fun cover.

It feels like a photo. I can usually feel the action of a cover, or a scene in a splash panel, but this feels like the action was literally paused. Like it had to be slowed down so you can properly see the action, because there's so much going on with all the different fronts of the fight. Dig it! I would draw the backgrounds as faint onomatopoeia overlapping each other so some are legible, and some aren't. So a little cartoony to offset the realism. Great first post of the year, Kahlil. Congrats!

I see what you're saying about the pause buttoon being hit, like in the middle of scene if it were a movie.  Liking the idea of the onomatopoeia, oooh.  "WHIP", "SLING"...there are definitely some options :)  Mayhaps I'll get it mocked up!  Appreciate the unique insights, as always, man!
