DescriptionContinuing indigenous hero adds in November - last week a Rafa add, this week a Rafa add :) Here a nice lookin’ painted Red Wolf cover by Rafa Garres! 20th new artist added to the collection in ‘23. A variant cover from the short-lived 2016 6-issue series, which I’d suggest reading if you haven’t. Written by Nathan Edmondson and drawn by Dalibor Talajic, it includes a mix of western elements with a modern-day thriller, as the main character gets transported from the past to today. On to the art! Done in gouache on thick illustration board so it can hold that paint, with a coat of varnish over the top. My only piece of comic OA with varnish – adds a pretty cool shine, though that doesn’t come through in the scan. I dug Red Wolf’s leaping pose, and the character he’s leaping at here, kind of reminded me of some of those crazily designed characters you see on Fabry covers. Love how big the guy’s gun is here! Overall, some sublime color textures rendered with the watercolors. Garres’s grittier style works well for the story and scene. Thanks, Danny Hoskins, for allowing me to pick it up – always happy to add some Red Wolf to the collection! Social/Sharing |

Handcuffed and leaping onto a scary lookin' guy with a gun. Red Wolf has some major moxie!! Really like the color palette used on this one. I'll bet the textures are really cool in person. Well done!!

Super cool cover! Is varnish needed on gouache to make it permanent? Just curious. :-)

Not an artist, but I don't think it's a go-to unless deliberate. Can change colors and overall darkness tone some, but if you're hoping to get things set and know what impact varnish can make on said colors and want that result...then yep! There's other finishing agents that can be used, I believe, but again, not a pro. Does make for a nice textured shiny effect on this one, though :)
Thanks, Yo, and all, for the comments!

Looks like Danny has become your Indigenous Heroes Art pusher! Like yourself, I love the leap, but I especially like the fact that he's about to leap on and beat the crap out of that hillbilly, redneck looking muthu$@#!

Oh yeah, he's been enabling some but I'm all about it :) I'm set, though. As of now. Can I guarantee that's IT it?! Welllll....
Thanks, Ruben!

Uh
Yeah, uh, that's right, uh
Yeah, yeah, uh-huh
I was raised on Red Wolves (I was raised by)
I was raised on Red Wolves (I was raised by)
I was raised by Red Wolves, each issue pull (I was raised by)
Readin' through the night, water colour might
Go and get payback, that's risking your life (I was raised by)
Rafa plays it right, yeah, you better pay him right
My identity in blood, I do Talajic for love
And Edmonson wrote us (us, yeah)
Doing varnishing like everything ain't leap too much (I'm too much)
You know my favorite time to come Two for cool Garres touch

Liefeld "big gun" cover... need to add a big gun, I mean, really big, here. Red Wolf's chest should have been 5x bigger too for good measure.

I'm not familiar with the artist or book but love the colors on this! I'm pretty certain I've seen that foreground character at a local gas station.

Great cover! I really enjoyed this short-lived series as well. I liked the updated/new Red Wolf. I've always been torn on his original outfit. I hope he shows up again and maybe with a companion next time.

I hear you as far as being torn on the the original look but I focus on intent of trying to bring some indigenous energy to the MU! I do like this newer look, too, and plan to get a commission of this RW at some point soon. And if you liked the series, stay tuned. May have more to share next week :) Thanks for the add, Bo!

Not familar with this comic, that said the cover image looks great! The colors on this piece are spot on and with the varnish you mentioned, this must be really nice to see in person.

Great cover. Love the colors used and the character designs. That gun is no joke. Unfortunately for him, it doesn't look like it is going to do him any good lol

Beautiful cover. Reminds me of the Silvestri Wolverine 35 cover art with Lady Deathstrike

Yeah that's the first thing that came to mind, that this was a Silvestri Wolverine cover swipe. I think it swipes from two covers: #35 & #37. The Red Wolf figure swipes the Wolverine from 37, and the other figure resembles the Wolverine figure in 35, just substitute the gun for an arm.

Yeah, I can see that. Also seen a few other similar leaping at bad guy covers - effective for having us pick up the book to see what's going on inside :) Even though this is a variant cover, this scene actually does happen in the book, albeit the guy he's leaping at looks different. Thanks, man, and glad you like the piece!

You know I love Garres! He brought a lot of this same over the top exaggerated grit to Hex and I couldn't get enough of it! Great to see a painted example.

I didn't know anything abot the Hex run but when I picked up this piece I looked back into some of his other work and you're right...just sublime gritty goodness! Talk about art style matching subject matter. Glad you like the piece as a fellow Garres fan, man, and I dig that Punisher you have, too. Thanks for the add!

What a lovely addition to your collection. I bet these colors sing in person. I appreciate your recent focus on indigenous representation, and I'm inspired to become more mindful of ensuring my collection is more inclusive per character and creator.

This is fantastic! Love the idea for this. Has a fun cartoony feel to it, but also a beautiful painted piece.
