DescriptionAnother OAX BP add. Was stoked to finally meet Paolo Rivera and his dad, Joe. I’m a big fan and have never gotten the chance to meet either of them in all my years of con going. So that was yet another plus to attending OAX. Both nice gents, for sure! Chatted, shared some art by them I had gotten in past, signed a couple books, and picked up this beaut! This is 1 of 4 connecting variant covers, issues 9 through 12, that the Riveras did for the Coates run. Always dug the composition of this one, with BP standing strong and steady on the right there and behind him, Aneka and Ayo up top in the Midnight Angel armor, then the Dora Milaje in Aneka’s shoulder, then the War Dog solders behind Manifold. I've always loved Eden’s portal design…works particularly well here in the overall cover design. Then, almost outside of the frame of everyone else and on top of the bottom banner, Tetu, one of the antagonists of the arc. Legit corner to corner BP goodness. Joe’s inks came on one board and Paolo’s pencils on another so make sure to check out the latter in the additional images. Thanks, Paolo, Joe, and Mark! Social/Sharing |

This is lovely! One of my only regrets from Oax was not getting something from Paolo .

Bold and clean, great linework. Paolo is awesome. Great cover for your collection and always great when you can chat with the artist and pick something up in person from them at a show. Well done!

Excellent OAX get! I really love the composition of this one too. I count six layers! And beautiful designs behind and around the characters. And though there's a lot going on, Black Panther still sticks out . Congrats on this gem!

I didn't count the layers but you're right, man! Cool new way to think about the depth and composition of the piece. And great point about how there's so much to see, but regardless, the King STILL stands out. Thanks, Paul, and all, for the comments!

Now this is sexy! Great pick up KG! I very much dig the large figures up top, and the composition is fantastic!

I met you with the art, you lit me up
You made me feel Ayo art was enough
We danced the Milaje, we drank too much
I hoped you'd share again
You would post it up
Then you smiled Paolo Rivera
In a minute, I got Panther cover
I put the Dora to the test
OAX these war dog soldiers
I said, "I already told ya
The ink that you should get Joe's best"
I knew I loved you then
When your cover owned
'Cause I played it cool when I was scared of reading Coates
I know I needed you
But as Panther showed
But Aneka stays with you as behind manifold
No way you won't Paolo
No way you won't get Joe

I really enjoy Rivera's work, but I think what I most like about this piece are the big, bold black shapes and composition, because they remind me of thw work of Steve Rude, who is one of my all-time favourites. Kudos!

Yeah, man, he leaned in on the shapes and the high contrast between block inks and white space areas...it's subtle but really adds to the graphic nature. So, I'm not super familar with Rude the Dude as I didn't read books he worked on when I was younger but have seen images, and did some relooking based on your comment...and yep, I can see what you're saying :) Thanks, Ruben!

This cover caught my eye before I even saw the Panther, fantastic layout on it. This is another reason why OAX was an event not to be missed. Congrats!!

I love how clean the image is, even though there is so much detail going on. The father/son combo is also another reason to celebrate, as they do such great work together.

Yes, ain't it cool that you gotta a father/son duo working on THIS stuff we all love?! Was excited to meet Paolo at OAX but honestly it was just as cool meeting both him AND his dad, Joe...both pleasant gents and totally willing to chat on their process! Thanks, Johnny!

Love covers that tell a story and this one is fit to be a movie poster. Beautiful inking on this piece too -- congrats Kahlil!

Excellent and complete composition! All the main characters in one cover. Great new addition Kahlil. I like very much the smooth presence of BP... such a very elegant and fine artwork.

It's been said above, and I agree this is an impressive composition. I love how Paolo worked in some many characters in such a smart way. Congrats my friend.

This is such a beautiful cover and I am so glad to see that you picked it up! The layout and execution is top notch. It really comes together to create an epic scene. The father son team-up is outstanding here and I think it's a strong argument that this is without question some of their finest work. Makes for another stunning addition to the BP museum! :)
