DescriptionA great splash from the Avengers Heroes Return event by the all-star team of Ed McGuinness and Mark Morales. While I admit I’ve yet to read said event (as I intend to read Aaron’s run in full once it’s finished), the prospect of Ed working on it was pretty exciting, fuelled by early previews and simply because he is one of my fav’ artists so each of his new project brings his share of excitation. Especially if Black Panther is involved considering how well he draws him. Just look at this splash and it will be obvious. This pushes all the right buttons for me. I mean this may not be intricate storytelling here but nobody can do big in your face action like Ed can and bring such a level of power and excitation on the page. First, we have a vertical full body shot of T’Challa against a very nice Wakanda background in a “thou shall not pass” moment. He looks so badass with the over bulky figure work and his dark figure works of so well against the light open backgrounds. And look how gorgeous that fallen tree is with some superb inks that remind me of how P.C.Russell approaches drawing trees. Then the geeky junk food panel of BP going against Hyperion and Nighthawk of the Squadron Supreme/Sinister. Which is, if you refer back to the original concept of that team aping/paying homage to the original Justice League, basically Black Panther going alone against Superman and Batman…and kicking both their asses. Again it pushes aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaall the right buttons :) The choreography of the scene is fantastic with BP going nasty in putting his claws inside Hyperion’s eyes and clawing at Nighthawk. I love how agile and jumping-y Ed made him look. Hyperion’s eye beams being diverted and the way his fingers are placed, indicating pain, is a great touch. And then we have Nighthawk preparing to throw his bata…nightarang at BP, looking not hindered at all by the current combat. An exceptional splash by most likely the best action art team working in comics these days. Many thanks to Ed for both the art and opportunity ;) This is the second day of my 2023 CAF birthday party. This is absolutlet stunning! Very powerful. McGuinness has such a bold style and his art never disappoints. Congrats on a great art acquisition!

I think the story needs to be read in order to understand why the actions i nthe 2nd panel don't seem to be continuing from what is happening i nthe first panel. I think it must be a page where a sharacter is probably narrating something that happened in the past. Either way, the McGuinness/Morales style is certainly evident and as lovely as ever.

Nice page. Both panels are terrific, but I'm really loving the left half. Always interesting to see an artist work with someone other than the inker they are most associated with. But I think Mark lays down some great inks here. I kind of saw Dexter's work as being more organic and Mark's are more technical. But each works well with Ed in their own way.

We're eating good for this party! Very beefy with McGuinness artwork! I like how the left foot breaks the border of the panel while the Supremes threaten to, with Nighthawk's ear, but not really.

McGuinness is the master of large scale superhero action. Great split-splash!

Whoo-howdy! Talk about a barn-burner! A sensational, powerful image of the King of Wakanda there (no one cuts a more imposing "you gotta get past me" figure than T'Challa, for my money), PLUS a chance to see the King at work in panel two (and I -love- how the treads on his boot looks like pads of a paw). Are you sure this isn't too much action for you though, Fred? You're getting up there now, and at your age it might be a better idea to post some pieces of heroes sitting down, or drinking a nice warm glass of milk or something...? ;) Outstanding McGuinness piece, F M! Congrats!
"A"! (that's the second part of my CAF birthday greeting to you!)

I wondered if you might've nabbed this one! Definitely green with jealous envy over here :) Love it, man. Like 2 splashes in one, and one of the best BP pages from McGuinness's run, and that's saying something! Dynamic straight standing imposing shot, THEN leaping into action. Congrats!
