Description

THE ETERNALS FACE-TO-FACE AGAINST THE COSMIC-POWERED HULK!

CRASH! BAM! RIP! with a dash of AAARRRR!! and RRR! from the Hulk! Amazing page from Kirby's Eternals, including the first appearance of the cosmic powered Hulk! Gotta love these classic Kirby panels with several images of the Hulk smashing some Kirby tech.

Another comic art collecting bucket list achieved, and a big one at that: published Jack Kirby drawn Hulk. This has been on the list for quite a while and took quite a bit of searching to find something that fit my requirements.

I was beginning to wonder if I might have to compromise this bucket list item a bit. See, I managed to get a Kirby Hulk page a while back from Tales to Astonish and it was a great page and I absolutely love it. But, the Hulk image wasn’t a fully enraged Hulk – it was a half Banner, half transformed Hulk. It wasn’t quite the Hulk image I wanted but it did check another bucket list box of published Silver Age twice up Hulk art. Just when I was starting to think I might chase down something else Kirby (unpublished Hulk, or a page from Devil Dinosaur, late Captain America, Black Panther, New Gods, etc.), this page jumped onto my radar and I pounced. I won't say I am done searching but this quenches the thirst for Kirby for now (and maybe quite a while).

I know some may say “but it is the Cosmic powered Hulk robot” and I will agree, but it is still Jack’s Hulk and done in the Eternals run where he wrote the story and drew the art. This was my first real introduction to Jack Kirby’s Hulk as a back issue pickup when I was buying Sal’s ongoing Hulk issues off the spinner rack. I loved the cosmic Hulk in these issues and am thrilled to have a page of my own! This page is in excellent shape with great inks by Mike Royer.

Image of the back shows that this came through the hands of Robert Latimer at one point.

UPDATE: spoke with the previous owner who shared some backstory on this page - sharing below

I saw an ad for artwork for sale in the Comic Buyer's Guide, around 1997.
It listed many pages, mostly by Kirby, for sale by Bob Latimer in Miami, Florida.
I had met him briefly, a few times at some local conventions, and heard of his collection of comics and artwork.
He would go to California, and buy complete stories directly from Kirby. These included Eternals 14, Forever People 9, and New Gods 9, 10 and 11. Latimer also had the complete Fantastic Four 63 and the 2nd annual where the 2 torches battle. Latimer had the complete issue 4 of the Machine Man 4 part series by BW Smith and Iron Man 232 by Smith and Layton. There were also many portfolios of other artwork.
Latimer had a welding shop in Miami on 79th Street. Not the safest of neighborhoods. I made an appointment to buy some of the artwork from him. He had a mini-comic shop set up next to his welding shop. There was a poorly painted sign on the building - "original comic art".
A friend and I went their on a Saturday afternoon. It was all a bit intimidating. We walked into the shop, and a rough looking guy named "Tiny" was working their. He looked like a character out of a comic book. Tiny said that we must be looking for Bob, because we didn't look like we were from the area (there were bars on all of the windows too). He went on that many foreigners and out-of-towners would go out of there way to visit the shop. A really old Kirby drawing of the FF was framed on a wall, otherwise, it looked like your basic comic shop of the time. Tiny began placing portfolios of comic art on the counter for us to go through. We went through them slowly, taking it all in. At that time, I had never seen so much outstanding artwork in one place. Especially in a welding shop in a shady part of town!
Bob Latimer, and his son walked into the place. They were doing a small comic and card show in a nearby mall.
He pulled out the Forever People, New Gods, and the Eternals books for me to go through. I picked out 2 New Gods pages, a nice Forever People page with Deadman on it, and the Eternals Hulk page. I chose the Hulk page, for the same reason you fell in love with it, the Hulk in action in every panel, not looking very cosmic, and no Eternals on the page. It was a pure Hulk page, drawn by the Hulk's creator. I also selected a BW Smith Machine Man page. I tried to get him to part with a couple of the FF pages, but he wanted to put them in Christies' auctions (they had comic and comic art auctions at the time, and he was getting good money for the pieces he sold through them). He also had some Barry Smith Conan-type barbarian comic strips that were beautiful. I wanted one of them, but he kept raising the prices as we spoke. It was difficult. All of his prices were high for the time, but it was quality work. Definitely worth every penny.

OH MAN!!!!!  There are home runs, and there are home runs!  This is an out of the park blast!  When you think of this short lived series, you always come to these two Hulk issues.  Scoring a multi-panel Kirby Hulk page from one of his Eternals issues would be a dream come true for any collector, so I can only imagine what this means to someone like you.  Big time congrats buddy!

Thanks Eric, I appreciate your comments so much as you always seem to capture something about a piece perfectly - like you did here with what this means. Thanks again, my friend!

Maybe - the more I look at this one, the more I doubt it is going anywhere. But true, it is a win/win in either scenario. Thanks Johnny!

Thank you! That is a very humbling statement Erange as I know of multiple Hulk collections with either more Hulk art, collections worth more, or both!

Kirby style, measure Hulk hands, darling
Resist art is defeating.
Kirby is the man.  Do you feel the same?
Am I only dreaming?
Is Hulk smashing an Eternal's brain?

Hulk believes cosmically, darling
I'll snipe this when you are sleeping
But you outbid me
You don't feel the same? Am I only dreaming?
Or is Hulk smashing (smashing) my Eternals flame?

Claim show claims
Mike shines through the inks
A bold Hulk so Kirby
Hulk then comes and brings the pain
I don't want to lose this feeling, oh

Great page with some scary Hulk images!  I briefly owned the Hulk/Ikaris cover to #15 in the late 90's and I'm still kicking myself for letting that go!

You would have to be familiar with the story to know that this wasn't really the Hulk. It is as rampaging as you can get. But then again, IMO, you can't go wrong with any Kirby art. Congrats.

Sure, for the sake of the story it's a Robot. But you're buying it because you want an example of the Hulk drawn by Kirby and that's still exactly what this is. Great page, too!

Thanks Ruben! And, you are exactly right as to the "why" I bought it ... and also for another reason - I love the cosmic Hulk and sought art from Ed McGuinness Red Hulk run with his version of cosmic Hulk (which he said he drew inspiration from this Kirby run). It's a win-win scenario!

Dave Smash! Excellent, excellent page! So much Hulk action on the page, too. I know, Cosmic Hulk, but it's a perfect Kirby Hulk page. Huge central Hulk, as Kirby a Kirby Hulk you can get in that bust panel, and a Feat of Strength. What more could you possibly want? Giant congrats!

'70s Kirby has experienced massive re-rating and rightly so.  His work in those years is so expressive and energetic.  This is a fantastic example.  And, BTW, nobody does flying debris as well as Kirby!

I couldn't agree more - 70's Kirby feels so expressive for what Jack was trying to do with his art, and the inkers (by and large) really stayed true to his pencil work. I love his work from this period and so happy to have an example like this. Thank you!

So awesome, man!  Hard to top Kirby Hulk, let alone an action packed page like this with something to see, including sound effect lettering, in every panel!  Gotta love the layout, with the storytelling on top and bottom sandwiching the money shot in the middle. Pure Kirby magic.  Congrats!
