DescriptionHere’s the 4th of 4 Black Panther (BP) posts to start out the year by creators who have had significant runs on the character. Here’s Denys Cowan’s contribution in the form of an early ‘80s pin up prior to any of his published work on BP! Unless this WAS published...if any of you know, let me know! I’ll actually be getting a chance to meet Cowan at a con later this year so hopefully will get that definitively answered. And if indeed not published, what did he and his friend/inker, the late Angel (also known as Pat) Gabriele create this for? And Cowan’s rep, Gin Kung, confirmed for me that Gabriele was the inker though it’s signed Wolfgang - I wonder why he signed it that way? OK, more questions to ask and hopefully get answered!Cowan drew the second volume of BP in 1988, which was a 4 issue miniseries, and he also did the Black Panther/Captain America: Flags of our Fathers mini in 2010. He’s also done some nice pin ups and covers of BP so I definitely wanted a piece of my own. I picked this up pretty affordably in a Comiclink auction last year. I just liked the strong central figure, that there’s a tech background, and that I also get a headshot. It’s also big at 11x17. And the capper for me, adding that vintage-y nostalgic feel,...ZIPATONE! So much zipatone, almost completely covering BP. What’s cool is that some of the zipatone is on top of the drawing/ink while some has the inking on top of it. Overall, a nice standing shot of the King. OK, that’s the 4th of 4 BP posts to start the year by some of his top creators, but rest assured, there will be more BP coming down the pike - you know me ;) Social/Sharing |

Great pickup and with so much mystery surrounding it! I love the zipatone too and agree, it gives the piece an instant classic look. I like how it's making sort of a comeback as I've seen it used in a few of my recent commissions. Congrats K!

Strangely more polished and less sketchy than the work he would produce on the mini. I'm more a fan of the later one he did with Cap' but you can't go wrong with such an iconic pose.

What a wonderfully regal image of the Black Panther, standing next to all his Wakandan high-tech equipment and apparatuses ... appartus ... apparati? What is the plural of that word??? Anyway, you're four for four with these awesome new Black Panther posts. Keep 'em comin'!

You got me, Paul - why don't you research that and come back and let us know?! Appreciate the 4 for 4 comment - I tend to agree :)
And T Shen - totally agree with ya. Screentones are coming back in a big way and I'm all for it!
Thanks for the comments, all, and stay tuned for more BP - may be done for now but definitely not DONE done! And I'll be sure to provide an update on my questions around this piece once I meet Denys!
