DescriptionSecond of 2 Doom’s Day posts! This one by one of my favorite artists in terms of unique stylization, Eric Canete! Jumped on it during Essential Sequential’s last holiday sale (thanks, Jason) and have had a lot of fun poring over it since it’s been in hand.Right away when I saw it I thought of Doom’s origin. This image feels like Victor has literally just donned the armor for the first time, as you can see the red from the flames from the forging cauldron on his right. After putting on the still scalding mask...witness…DOOM. The armor looks like it has real weight, and you gotta love the foreshortening of the left arm, with this fist large, more lighted, and outlined. And check out that belt detail – you can see his initials: “VVD”. Dope. There’s some fine detailing throughout with a mix of hatch-y lines and next level tonal gradient and color work. Most obvious there is the red to green and grey as you move left to right. I’ve got a couple of black and white pieces by Eric in my gallery but always had in the back of my mind that I needed to pick up a color one at some point. Seeing this quickly brought that thought from the back of my mind to the front! Hope y’all like! Social/Sharing |

The neutral colors really force you to focus on the grit and incredibe texture of this fabulous piece.

Great point, Eric, particularly with the reds. Red as a color in and of itself naturally pops, but it's more muted here, in addition to the othe colors, and that indeed lends to our viewing pleasure in terms of poring over the textural elements. Thanks for the comment, man, and thanks to everyone else as well - always appreciated!

What a sick take on Von Doom himself! So awesome. The textures feel like he'll reach through my phone!

I've never been much of a commission collector, but I do enjoy looking at them in other peoples' collections and I love everything about this particular piece. From the use of reds to establish the lighting, to the wonderful textures he created and down to the little details you mentioned such as the custom belt buckle engraving. Superb DOOM!

Canete's color work just keeps getting better. I love the belt buckle, but my favorite thing here is Doom's eyes.

I didn't mention that in my description by I agree as far as those eyes being striking. Menacing, right?! That's how we like our Victor. Though it's a mask he has on his expression ain't lost on any of us! Thanks, Travis!

What a perfect character for Canete to draw! His style really brings out the menace of Doom in the best way possible! Huge congrats!

This is absolutely epic, and in in a class of its own (as befits both the character and your collection)! I have just been sitting here looking at this piece over and over for minutes now and am struck by the incredible sense of setting, purpose, and intent brought forth through the colors and textures that the others have so rightly pointed out. Doom’s green robes are meant to be regal and majestic, but I always like them best a little ragged and tattered around the edges, when he has felt compelled to take matters into his own hands and is not afraid of... well... anything. This is a piece that is completed (ironically) by the lack of backgrounds, riveting your attention right where it deserves to be - squarely on the figure of the man himself. Again, those colors conspire to weave an entire narrative in the viewer’s mind (he’s definitely SOMEWHERE doing SOMETHING!) and I love your theory of this being the unveiling of the armor. And that belt buckle is the cherry on the cake here: subtle and classy, but unmistakably focused on himself. What a work! Mega-congrats, my friend!

Jason with another record comment in terms of length and insight! Always appreciated, man. Totally get what you're saying in that he's clearly somewhere doing something...for me it's donning the armor for the first time. For another viewer could be something else. Gotta love that about art. A strong "better step aside" vibe for all of the reasons you note, and that belt...if you don't know, now you know! "VVD" - and you best not forget!

Magnificent portrayal of Doctor Doom! I can totally imagine that off to his right is the flaming cauldron that forged his armor. He definitely looks like he is ready to wreak havoc in this form for the very first time, which is further emphasized by that immense fist coming right at you. And I totally dig that belt buckle! Congrats!

Pick a fist, knave...Welcome to Latveria! This image really does have weight. And that early armor is so cool. It totally looks like he just donned it for the first time. And the red heat reflection, the transition from hot to cold tones, so many great artistic tricks. You've been killing these commission pieces! Very nice. Congrats!

Ha! I mean, in comparison to himself...Vic WOULD probably see everyone else as a knave! Thanks for the comment, J - got some more nice unpublished stuff comin', along with the published stuff too, of course. Stay tuned!

At first I thought his belt buckle was a decpticon logo - but then I moved on to the rest of this impressive image and forgot all about the accessories. Eric has been a great artist for some time. Love seeing him move into color work. The textures he creates make this feel like you can reach out and touch it, but we all know thats a bad idea. The guy is dr.doom right. not mr.touch my cloak. if you know what I mean. I am also impressed by the boxing or possible martial arts stance. You never think of stodgy old dudes who live in castles and wear metal masks to be hip like that - but clearly Eric's Doom is chill indeed. Congrats KG on this fun pick up!

Totally agree regarding the textures, man, as well as reaching out and touching elsewhere - this ain't the dude! As you note, the stance, as well as the expression, are pretty strong indicators that you should just pass on by :) Thanks!
