DescriptionContinuing non-comic comic art posts here! Last was from a movie, this one from the world of video games. Played the arcade machine at Thatsaburger burger shop in my rural northern AZ town as a kid, then to home console later. Best bud and I used to play ALL the time, like many, many a kid and teen from the time. SFII! And the handful of editions after :) And my first piece by Iban Coello!Nice figure work taking from the video game, but what I liked most were the colors. Some great watercolor rendering, which provides a looser, more organic look, that pairs well against the exactness of the figure line work. Got a solid scan here but it looks better in person. And a big bonus at the bottom there – “HADOKEN” along with the classic controller move to throw the fireball, with a lil’ Ryu doing just that at the right. FUN stuff. And speaking of fun, if so inclined, check this out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xbHLQAthI7M . Coello doing this same piece but with the hurricane kick might be tougher, at least the wording part :) Social/Sharing |

Great design in this piece. The little elements around Ryu are clever and well executed!

To live is to fight, to fight is to live. That said, I could sure go for a cheeseburger right now.

There's some talk going 'round town
That you really go HADOKEN
They say you really put coins down
When I'm getting the best Iban
I gave Coello my love
I even Dhalsim my money
Tell me, Chun Li, ain't that KENough?
What more do you want from Ryu?
I play the fool with Thatsaburger
But I Guile when we're apart, yeah
I couldn't do Arizona
Don't break what's left of M. Bison art, KG
Ryu, Honda Street me Sagat
Which console I love 2?
How can you do this Zangief
When you know I care?
Ryu, Blanka Street me so bad
When you know I love 2?

"When you know I love 2" - ha! Look at you getting the whole SFII cast in there!
And you got me listening to Prince today - thanks for that as well! Been too long since I went through some faves. "Baby I'm a Star" always gets me hyped!

Very cool! I'm loving the silhouette at the bottom and the flowy rendering of the head band as it blows in the wind. The 90s were all about Street Fighter, X-Men, and Hip-Hop for me... so glad to see them still going strong after all of these years.

Ha ha, never thought of him being the BP from Brazil! They both definitely bad boys! From the jungle :)
I did like playing Ryu, and Chun-Li, too. But I really did play 'em all a lot. Well maybe not Zangief as much :) Not knocking the Russian bear, just moved a bit slow for me. But he had the most devastating move with the sky high twisting pile driver! Thanks, F!

That is such a masterful use of watercolors. I didn't know Iban Coello could paint like that! He really is amazing. Fantastic piece, K!

While never a big street fighter gamer, I absolutely love the visuals for these characters. Love this, congrats!

Man, Ryu was my JAM. My buddy who was great at Ken always kicked my ass, but I was loyal and stuck with RYU.

I'm glad you dig it, man! Super fun, right?! I've recenlty gotten that same itch for nabbing some comic OA pieces from non-comic properties, including video games. I got a couple coming :) And yes! YOU get that itch scratched, too - looking forward to seeing how you do it! Thanks!

I've got some Final Fantasy VII inspired art, as well as some animation cels from Captain N: The Game Master
...but that's about it so far, definately have ideas but need to do more research and pick artists, might be the theme I go with for any NYCC commissions this year!
