DescriptionThe is the final cover from this weird, trippy 60's cross-over. I'd posted the first two a few weeks ago and, again, it ~seems~ that what happened was after DC's success with their Justice League / Society team-up that a number of small press companies decided try to glom on to that success and do their own. So what we've got here is Charlton, Archie and Harvey all throwing their respective heroes into this big storyline. While the first part came out under the Harvey banner (Thrill-O-Rama #4) and the second part came out through Charlton (Charlton Premiere #20) this final part looks to have been scheduled to come out as a Mighty Crusaders issue from Archie. #7 was the final published issue of that series so it looks like Archie was hoping to revitalize the series beginning with this issue.Along the left hand side are the Archie heroes the Modern Shield, Mr. Justice, Fly-Girl, the Falcon and the Fly. Along the bottom are some Charlton folks, Judomaster, Sarge Steel, Spookman (yes, that's right - Spookman), Shape and Peacemaker. On the right are the Harvey folks, Spyman, Bee-Man, Black Kitten, Atoma and the Scarlet Arrow. In the center you've got more of Archie's Mighty Crusaders, Bob Phantom, Steel Sterling, the Green Cobra, the Golden Age Shield, the Web, the Fox and the Hangman. The villain ~looks like~ the Blue Beetle villain the Mask but I'm not sure. Trippy to be sure. I'd've loved to seen the Falcon, Peacemaker and Bee-Man together in a panel. Just for the clashing color schemes. And, you know, looking at all three covers next to each other (the other 2 are in the Small Press Heroes & Villains Commissions gallery) I'm reminded of how Julius Schwartz would come up with covers then have the stories written to them. I wonder if that's what happened here. The companies had the covers worked up but as the project never came to fruition all we're left with is the covers. It'd explain why I'd never heard of this before. And why there's no actual page art. Social/Sharing |

Who signed it at the top, in the "ERS" of "CRUSADERS"? The editor?

I'm guessing your right Roy. You can clearly see the artists signatures at the bottom (in itself a big deal for the time) so I'm thinking it's the editor who's signed at the top. I'm thinking this adds to the idea of it being a project that never went anywhere. Probably the editor giving this away to someone as a present.

Oh, how I remember the Avengers Annual cover this was based on by Sal Buscema, with the High Evolutionary holding the "bomb." This is just too cool for words.
