DescriptionThanks to Bill and others for being open to folks sharing non-comic art on the site. I was told this piece was published in Catalog Comix: Artists at Large in the early 70's, which would technically make it comic book art, but that book is so rare I haven't been able to find a copy to verify. Anyways I hope you can dig this beautiful feast of technique and design by Bill Ogden.Bill Ogden was known for his surf art, posters, and later his commercial work with Volcom, Burton, The Triple Crown, Billabong, and Quicksilver. He seamlessly married LSD generated visions with Art Nouveau styles while he came up in Laguna Beach and around Southern California in the art scene with Rick Griffin and others in the late 60's and 70's. This is Ogden's original pencil and ink drawing from 1971 done on 20 by 26 vellum. It's huge!! I was awestruck when I saw it as it has several key elements you'd want in an Ogden piece, from the beautiful sea enchantress, the wave, mushrooms, tiny character, and the architectural layout. My understanding is this art was later used for "California" t-shirts in ‘73 to '78. I picked up this piece from another great artist, Scott McDougall, who was selling some work on behalf of the Denis Wheary estate. Wheary was the owner of Wheary & Associates, which printed a lot of the posters and images by Ogden, Griffin, and others for years. Wheary was close friends with several of the artist that he worked with. Ogden passed December 2022. I haven't seen a lot of Ogden's originals out there so I feel lucky to have found this one. It was great to see McDougall show this piece at an art showcase at Semi-Aquatic in Brookings, Oregon June 2024 (photo below). Awesome illustration! Delicate as if it might float away in the wind, or break apart and fold unto itself, never to be seen whole again. Congrats!

This is awesome! I love how the linework flows, especially around the mermaid and the waves. That mix of organic and cosmic elements gives it such a trippy, dreamlike vibe. It feels like it’s caught somewhere between a surf trip and a space voyage. The Art Nouveau influence is super strong too, especially in the curves and symmetry, and that stippling work adds so much depth. Great piece, George!

a really gorgeous illustration, so many influences and techniques blending together to make a cohesive yet expressive and ethereal set of imagery. super cool piece and an interesting history to it's usages. a really cool and unique find. congrats man!
