DescriptionAh, Tailspin Tommy. I was first introduced to this character when I came upon a copy of one of the Universal serials. I remember thinking it wasn't quite up to the level of Republic's output, but I enjoyed it, nonetheless. When I started collecting original art, I tried for several Tommys, but never was able to get one at a reasonable price. Then a few weeks ago, a "birthday" strip showed up and I had to try for it. Luckily, I won it pretty cheaply. (In fact, Buyer's Premium, shipping and tax came to more than the actual bid and it was still cheap.) Jeff Singh below brings up the issue of Reynold Brown, who I did not initially credit on this strip. To be fair, I didn't really know the history of "Tailspin Tommy", but his comment got me researching. Forrest hired Brown some time between 1935/1937 to ink Forrest's pencils. Some sources say that Brown eventually drew the strip entirely, even taking on an assistant of his own, known only as "Lloyd". So, given the likely year of this strip, it seems reasonable to assume Reynold Brown worked on it, inking at the very least. But there is no indication that Forrest wasn't writing the strip at this time and the poses have that Forrest feel to me. So, I'm sticking with "Hal Forrest, All" and "Reynold Brown, Inker". Lloyd (whoever he was) will just have to sit this one out. Social/Sharing |

Nice. Art is by Reynold Brown, Forrest assistant which is a good thing as I think he was a better artist. Forrest might have inked him but this looks more like pure Brown to me. Three great panels here but I like the first one the best.

Lovely work - humorous dialogue. :-) Birthday art is always a plus!

Wonderful looking strip!!! Like mine I really do think this is Brown's work. Love that first panel especially.
