Description

I love Terry and the Pirates and Milton Caniff's work on that series. George Wunder, who followed Caniff, was fantastic but nothing in strip art will compare to Caniff at his peak.

I think 1939 was his best year both artistically and for storytelling. Caniff's style had fully matured but had not evolved into his later style and for me, this is his best art. It was also an important year as it is the year Terry went from being an adventure strip to beginning the transition to a war time strip. It is the year Terry grew up and was separated from Pat Ryan. One of the big catalysts for change was April Kane, one of my favorite Caniff females. Here she is in her first appearance in the New Years Day Sunday for 1939. 1939 also contains my favorite Terry storyline when Terry enlists the Dragonlady into teaching how to dance so he can impress April at the big ball. This Sunday also introduces Sanjak (in disguise) who is one of the more interesting villains from Terry. A cross dressing lesbian who had hypnotized poor April to take her captive with overtly sexual connotations. Sanjak is named after a Greek island near Lesbos. In 1939, open homosexuality would not have been permitted in comic strips but Caniff is here pushing boundaries like he did in so many other ways. This Sunday was cut up into panels and reformatted for this orientation and comes on two large boards. Sundays had to be printed in two formats and so art often had to be reformatted and artists had to solve this problem in their formatting.

A wonderful Sunday page by a master at his peak.

Quite the find! Kudos, Jeff, and the last panel is charming. I doubt that we'd see the likes of the bizarre Sanjak in today's repressive climate of thought control.

This is a stunning piece of graphic storytelling, Jeff. Thanks so much for sharing it!

& as a bonus you get a classic chunk of exposition! This strip exemplifies the intricate plotting of Terry, and the way there is always something new and unexpected coming around the corner. Also love the jungle foliage in 7 and 8.
