DescriptionSigh...this is the kind of piece that makes everything in the world seem right. I could go on and on about this piece and probably will so you may want to bail on reading after a few lines. This is one of the rare dailes with Terry getting dancing lessons with the Dragon lady. It is from 1939, my favorite year for Caniff and Terry. Here we see Terry learning to dance with the Dragon Lady and despite her claim to the contrary, I do believe we get to see a bit behind the mask of the Dragon Lady. Great Caniff dialogue and imagery. It is from my all time favorite comic strip storyline where Terry saves the Dragon Lady after she has been shot by thugs (see that daily elsewhere in this gallery). He nurses her back to health and to return the favor, she helps Terry out with his problem...he can't dance and as such fears he won't be able to take April Kane to the grand ball. There is so much backstory to all of this that includes the first appearance of April Kane on Jan 1 of 1939 (see that very Sunday in this gallery as well) and the evil cross dressing lesbian Sanjak who hypnotizes April for unspecified nefarious purposes with strong sexual undertones. Terry and Pat foil Sanjak's plans and save April and so the budding romance between April and Terry begins only to challenged by interloping Deeth Crispin the Third. Terry is so distraught of his lack of dancing skills that he writes April a farewell note and plans to leave China because of his shame. On his way to deliver the letter he saves the Dragon Lady. There is still so much more to this story and its importance in the Terry saga and how this is the transitional story line from pre-war to wartime Terry.Caniff always gave his dailies a fun title. Here it is "An Old Score - and not Terpsicore", a reference to the delight of dancing and one of the 9 muses. Social/Sharing |
