DescriptionI love Werewolves. I used to run around my home growling barefoot and shirtless with my clawed six-year-old hands slashing and my baby teeth gnashing. But it wasn't the moon that transformed me into a mini-lycanthrope, it was “Werewolf By Night!” It was by far my favorite comic and issue #18 was my favorite issue. Anyone who was reading WWBN in the 70’s has certain images implanted in their minds. This illustration is definitely a memory shared by its readers. This was a two-page spread that seemed larger than the book itself. Two ferocious creatures charging to tear each other apart. It can’t possibly get any cooler than that. But it does. The art is what the kid in me is loving about this page. What I’m enjoying as an adult are the notes. On the back of the page artist Don Perlin pens a note to writer Mike Friedrich (see pic). Perlin suggests to connect this issues villain (Ma Mayhem) to another villain (Baron Thunder) to make them a team working together to capture our furry protagonist. This proposal becomes part of the plot of this issue and issue #20. The creative process laid out before you on the back of an art piece. Gotta love it. This page has everything for me. It is the holy grail of my grails. I once asked Perlin if he still had this piece or knew who owned it. He didn’t. I never thought I would see it because I didn’t believe anyone would ever let it go. To whoever put this piece up on auction I thank you from the bottom of my six-year-old heart. Social/Sharing |

Werewolf by Night fans would want commissions based on this scene because it is so cool of a confrontation! Perlin knew how to make the angles work to bring this to life and Royer's inks give it that feeling of depth to capture the moment before they make impact for maximum tension.

Major congrats! You are now undisputed god-king of the collecting hobby, and if an extinction level asteroid ended all human life a few days from now, it was all worth it.
Certain art belongs with certain collectors, and there is order in the universe!

This is one of Perlin's most memorable issues, and, yes, the inks look great. Cheers on getting your grail of grails!
