DescriptionPublished 2023.Variant cover to Titan Comics Conan the Barbarian 1. I have been a Colleen Doran fan for over 40 years, and while this may not be the best page of art she has ever done, it’s now my favorite piece of art by her that I own. And yes, it does have a Barry Windsor Smith vibe. This is primarily because Barry was heavily influenced by Art Noveau and the Pre Raphaelite art styles, both which are also favorites of Colleen’s. Colleen, of course, is master of many styles, and for this piece she was going for that look. One of the artists that Colleen admires is Harry Clarke who was heavily influenced by both the Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements. As for Barry's influences, from Barry’s own bio page: ‘Incorporating his early influences of Art Nouveau’s organic flourishes, and the extraordinarily detailed naturalism of the Pre Raphaelite school of painting, Windsor-Smith’s ever- evolving methods of storytelling brought a sense of ornate classicism to the monthly Conan comic books that even now, over thirty years later, remains without peer.’ Social/Sharing |

The detail and colors, her past and Conan's future shown by the skulls, the sensuousness and cruelty of the monsters embrace – the whole scene gives you so much to absorb. Fantastic!

Now and then I think of Colleen draws these lovers
Like when you said you felt the Barry Windsor vibe
Told myself Pre Raphaelite for me
But felt so lonely in your own Colleen
But that was love, and it's innnate I still remember
You can get artdicted to a Doran kind of madness
Like illustration with no end, always defend
So when we found that Harry Clarke makes sense
Well, you said that we'd Barbarian
But I'll admit that I was glad this was cover
But you didn't have to cut me off
Make out with a woman serpent and now you were slicing
And I don't even need your love
But you treat me like a warrior, Conan feels so rough
No, you didn't have to group Deco
Have your friends collect your comics and then change your number
I guess that Titan needs that, though

As you say, Colleen has worked in many styles. So if she grew up as a fan of BWS as many of us did, then I think it's only fitting that she do a published piece in his style and I must say that it turned out beautifully! Truly exquisite and I'm sure you'll get a lot of enjoyment out of it as you see it hanging on your wall every day. Congrats!

Not much of a Conan fan but Wow! This is a spectacular piece of art. The style, the colors, the image, all of it perfect. It's beautiful! I would have been tempted to buy it, it's that great. congrats!!
